What

uphold guard --stage STAGE --junit FILE, or UPHOLD_JUNIT=/abs/file.xml for a hook run whose argv the caller does not own, writes one JUnit XML document per run: one testsuite for the stage (package="uphold"), one testcase per rule evaluated. Unset, nothing is written and the run is unchanged.

guard testcase exit
pass plain 0
refuse failure 1
could not look error 2
bypass skipped, property allowed=id|all 0

classname is the bundled set or local; properties carry builtin, set, stage and the binary version. No subject text, no hostname, no user name.

Replaces the JSON Lines record of #387 (UPHOLD_VERDICTS, unreleased), as the revised design in #386 decided: the fleet already has one evidence format, and four testcase states equal the four guard answers.

Rules

  • Created or replaced, never appended, so the variable names a file per stage.
  • The flag wins over the variable; a relative flag value means the caller's directory, a relative variable value is exit 2 (a hook runs from the tree root).
  • Opened after the policy loads and before the first rule runs: unwritable or empty is exit 2 with nothing judged; a stage with no rules writes a suite of zero tests.
  • A rule that could not look writes error, rules after it get no testcase, exit 2.
  • guard --text with the variable set is exit 2; the shim and uphold hook do not read it.

Library

quick-junit 0.8 (nextest's). It writes no hostname unless asked; junit-report writes hostname="localhost" always, which no-running-os-identity-metadata refuses. cargo deny check passes unchanged.

Tests

tests/guard_cli.rs reads each file back with quick-junit: pass, refuse, bypass (id and all), error-then-nothing, unwritable, empty and relative values, zero-rule stage, policy that will not load, --text, no hostname under the identity rule, and a real git push through a pre-push hook. src/junit.rs holds two unit tests. Full cargo test, clippy --all-targets, cargo fmt --check, cargo deny check, uphold check and uphold scan pass.

Docs: docs/REFERENCE.md "Recording what a stage decided" (replacing the #387 section), docs/DESIGN.md "uphold decides; it does not record".

Closes #386.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Guard runs can now write a JUnit XML report to the absolute path specified by UPHOLD_JUNIT. The report includes one testcase per evaluated rule, with statuses for passes, refusals, lookup errors, and bypasses.
    • Reports omit rule input and refusal text, and are created or replaced on each run. When the setting is unset, no report is written.
  • Changes
    • JUnit XML replaces the previous UPHOLD_VERDICTS JSONL output. Invalid paths and use with guard --text are rejected.

With UPHOLD_JUNIT set to an absolute path, `uphold guard --stage STAGE`
writes one JUnit XML document: one testsuite for the stage, package
"uphold", and one testcase per rule the stage evaluated. A pass is a
plain testcase, a refusal a failure, a rule that could not look an
error, and a bypass a skipped testcase whose `allowed` property says
whether the id or `all` was named. The classname is the bundled set or
`local`; the properties carry builtin, set, stage and the binary's
version. No testcase carries the message, diff, refs, hostname or user
name a rule or a machine would give away.

JUnit rather than a format of uphold's own, because the gate tier
already writes, publishes and links JUnit under .test-evidence/, so a
publisher reads a guard run with nothing new to parse. That replaces
the JSON Lines record UPHOLD_VERDICTS wrote (#387), which never shipped
in a release: src/verdicts.rs is gone with Sink::from_env, Sink::record,
Outcome::name and the tests
a_bypass_names_what_switched_the_rule_off_and_a_pass_does_not,
a_sink_nobody_asked_for_writes_nothing and the helper written; from
tests/guard_cli.rs go guard_with_verdicts, verdict_lines, outcome_of,
verdicts_name_each_rules_answer_and_never_the_subject,
a_verdicts_file_that_cannot_be_opened_stops_the_run_before_it_decides
and an_empty_verdicts_variable_is_refused_and_not_read_as_unset, each
replaced by a JUnit case.

The file is created, never appended, after the policy loads and before
the first rule runs: an unwritable path, an empty value or a relative
one is exit 2 with nothing judged, and a stage with no rules writes a
suite of zero tests. A rule that could not look writes its error and
ends the run as before. `guard --text` with the variable set is exit 2,
since that seam learns only what refused. The shim and `uphold hook`
do not read the variable.

Closes #386 for the guard seam; the shim and hook seams follow.

📝 Walkthrough

Guard runs can now write a caller-named JUnit XML report with one testcase per evaluated rule. The CLI validates and opens the report before rule evaluation. Passes, refusals, unknown outcomes, and bypasses map to JUnit testcase states.

Changes: Guard JUnit evidence

Layer / File(s) Summary
JUnit report construction
Cargo.toml, src/junit.rs
Adds JUnit report path validation, file handling, testcase metadata, outcome mapping, serialization, and tests for report contents and empty suites.
Staged guard integration
src/main.rs, src/guard/mod.rs, src/verdicts.rs
The CLI validates and opens the configured report before rule evaluation. The guard records rule outcomes and writes reports on completion and evaluation errors. The previous JSONL verdict sink is removed.
CLI coverage and documentation
tests/guard_cli.rs, docs/DESIGN.md, docs/REFERENCE.md
CLI tests cover report states, metadata, invalid paths, partial evaluation, empty suites, and hook execution. Documentation describes the JUnit output and its constraints.

Explanation

For #386, the PR adds optional UPHOLD_JUNIT output for guard --stage, creates the sink before rule evaluation, and records pass, refusal, bypass, and fatal-evaluation outcomes as JUnit testcases. The summaries and PR description report coverage for invalid paths, zero-rule stages, policy-load failure, --text, a real pre-push hook, and identity/message-text omissions. src/junit.rs, src/main.rs, src/guard/mod.rs, the CLI tests, and the documentation cover the requested implementation and usage. The publisher acceptance check is a separate follow-up, not a requirement for this PR.

A flag is the conventional way a tool names its JUnit file, as pytest's
--junitxml is, and it is what a gate task types. The variable stays for
the run whose command line the caller does not own: a hook's argv is the
hook definition's, pinned by the repository, and the environment is the
one channel that reaches from `git push` through the runner to the guard.
The flag wins when both are given. A relative flag value means the
caller's directory, as it does for any other command; the variable's
absolute-path rule is unchanged, since a hook runs from the top of the
working tree. An empty value is exit 2 under either spelling.

Write the JUnit suite after printing all refusal diagnostics.

If the suite write fails after one or more refusals, written(suite)? returns before the refusal reports and the UPHOLD_ALLOW= hint. Moving the write only after the refusal loop still places it before the hint. Print the hint first, then write the suite.

Remove stale JUnit output before staged-run setup.

If config::load fails, or reading pre-push input fails, the command exits before Sink::create and leaves an earlier report at UPHOLD_JUNIT. This contradicts the documented contract that a failure before the first rule leaves the file absent. A caller can mistake the earlier report for evidence from the failed run.

runner::push does not fail when neither ref channel supplies data; it returns Source::Absent. Clear the old file only for a staged run, after the --text rejection. Clearing it earlier would delete a report when --text exits without producing staged evidence.

The text seams answered in refusals only, so #388's evidence file could
not be written from them. The text dispatch now returns one answer per
rule it consulted: pass, refuse, unknown, bypass, or out of scope at this
destination, a fifth state a stage never has. The seam's exit code and
stderr are derived from that list, so the human report and the file
cannot disagree, and the kani proofs in `text` are extended to it.

Each seam writes one document per invocation: `uphold shim <command>`,
`uphold hook <harness>` and `uphold guard --text`, `package="uphold"`.
Out of scope is a skipped testcase with `scope=destination`, because a
rule stood down at this destination is a run-time decision a reader of
a bypass log asks about, where a rule a stage never declared is a fact
about the policy. A `subject` property carries the subject kind and
never its content; no destination, owner, URL, branch, argv or body
text enters the file, since the destination is what
prevent-unowned-target protects. Consultations write the rules they
ran and not themselves.

UPHOLD_JUNIT or --junit naming an existing directory writes one
`<suite>-<id>.xml` per invocation, named by a v8 UUID built from the
clock, the process id and a counter. The shim and hook accept only the
directory form, a file there being exit 2 before the command runs; the
hook and `guard --text` take --junit, the shim has no flag.
UPHOLD_ALLOW=all at the shim writes a suite of zero tests with the suite
property `allowed=all`. `guard --text` writes a document instead of
refusing; the refusal's test and the proof helpers the old answer shape
needed go with it, each replaced by the per-answer form or the
shadow-array form:
clean_means_every_consulted_kind_looked_and_found_nothing,
every_consulted_kind_is_asked_once_and_every_finding_is_kept,
looked_and_found_nothing,
the_text_seam_refuses_to_run_with_the_variable_set,
the_verdict_is_a_function_of_the_consulted_answers.

The proofs model the list cheaply: a four-letter answer alphabet, a
unit ledger with a refusal counter for the two verdict proofs, and a
fixed shadow array of byte codes for the two list proofs. The first
shape, a vector of outcomes read back symbolically, took minutes and
gigabytes per harness and put the CI job past its runner's memory.
That first shape's proof a_consulted_kind_that_could_not_look_is_broken_and_ends_the_list
is folded into a_consulted_kind_that_could_not_look and
the_list_is_a_function_of_the_consulted_answers, and its helper
outcome, which decoded a ledger entry into an Outcome, is gone with the
entries it decoded.

Closes #389.

destination, a fifth state a stage never has. The seam's exit code and
stderr are derived from that list, so the human report and the file
cannot disagree, and the kani proofs in `text` are extended to it.

Each seam writes one document per invocation: `uphold shim <command>`,
`uphold hook <harness>` and `uphold guard --text`, `package="uphold"`.
Out of scope is a skipped testcase with `scope=destination`, because a
rule stood down at this destination is a run-time decision a reader of
a bypass log asks about, where a rule a stage never declared is a fact
about the policy. A `subject` property carries the subject kind and
never its content; no destination, owner, URL, branch, argv or body
text enters the file, since the destination is what
prevent-unowned-target protects. Consultations write the rules they
ran and not themselves.

UPHOLD_JUNIT or --junit naming an existing directory writes one
`<suite>-<id>.xml` per invocation, named by a v8 UUID built from the
clock, the process id and a counter. The shim and hook accept only the
directory form, a file there being exit 2 before the command runs; the
hook and `guard --text` take --junit, the shim has no flag.
UPHOLD_ALLOW=all at the shim writes a suite of zero tests with the suite
property `allowed=all`. `guard --text` writes a document instead of
refusing; the refusal's test and the proof helpers the old answer shape
needed go with it, each replaced by the per-answer form or the
shadow-array form:
clean_means_every_consulted_kind_looked_and_found_nothing,
every_consulted_kind_is_asked_once_and_every_finding_is_kept,
looked_and_found_nothing,
the_text_seam_refuses_to_run_with_the_variable_set,
the_verdict_is_a_function_of_the_consulted_answers.

The proofs model the list cheaply: a four-letter answer alphabet, a
unit ledger with a refusal counter for the two verdict proofs, and a
fixed shadow array of byte codes for the two list proofs. The first
shape, a vector of outcomes read back symbolically, took minutes and
gigabytes per harness and put the CI job past its runner's memory.
That first shape's proof a_consulted_kind_that_could_not_look_is_broken_and_ends_the_list
is folded into a_consulted_kind_that_could_not_look and
the_list_is_a_function_of_the_consulted_answers, and its helper
outcome, which decoded a ledger entry into an Outcome, is gone with the
entries it decoded.

Closes #389.
