P2-T100a (Tier O): the first full run of the vendored Spark 4.2.0 SQLQueryTestSuite through the engine, the frozen statement-level baseline, and a CI ratchet over it.

What changed

  • golden::session_engine: an Engine over krishiv-session. Each run of a file gets a fresh session with the file's configs and fixture tables. SET/RESET are mirrored into the session config, then sent to Session::sql like any other statement, so they are scored on the session's own answer. Rows are rendered by golden::cell using the result's Spark types; sortedness comes from the analyzed plan; each statement has a time limit. The harness adds no SQL support of its own.
  • Runner: records each statement's outcome and why it failed (error class, schema, first differing row).
  • tests/spark-golden/known-failures.json: lists every statement that does not pass, each with a category. A category is one of: an unsupported feature (with its plan task), a known divergence (ADR 0023), or a bug (with its owner). The file also holds the classification rules (golden::classify) that seed new entries.
  • Ratchet: the golden_ratchet test runs the full suite in normal CI (~90 s debug, ~70 MB RSS). A statement that newly fails fails CI. A listed statement that now passes must be removed. To refresh the list: golden-report --engine session --ratchet update. To check it: --ratchet check.
  • tests/spark-golden/exclusions.json is frozen with no file-level exclusions. Every file runs.
  • Two fixes surfaced by the run, each with a test:
    • TRY_CAST('1.23' AS INT) is now NULL (try_cast uses ANSI parsing).
    • LIMIT -1 / LIMIT CAST(NULL AS INT) now raise INVALID_LIMIT_LIKE_EXPRESSION.IS_NEGATIVE / .IS_NULL instead of INTERNAL_ERROR.

Numbers (Spark 4.2.0, JDK 21 results, 349 files)

passed total
parse 14,025 18,827
negative (error class) 629 3,857
result 966 15,363

17,625 statements are listed. Most fall in two categories:

  • 12,225 are SQL commands, or queries that read what a failed command creates (P2-T179).
  • 4,797 are features not in P2a.

The rest are 106 auto-generated column names, 29 ignored legacy configs, 27 conditional functions not bound in physical plans, and 5 other analyzer/datetime bugs. These are all bugs with owners.

Checks

  • cargo nextest on testkit, plan, sql, kernels, session and exec all pass.
  • clippy --all-targets -D warnings and cargo doc -D warnings on the touched crates pass.
  • xtask layering: OK.
  • Diff coverage: 97.4%. The uncovered lines are mainly the binary's session/ratchet path, which the library tests and golden_ratchet exercise.
  • pr-size: about 2,500 counted lines. The baseline is under tests/spark-golden/ and is allowlisted.

TRY_CAST('1.23' AS INT) is NULL in Spark 4.2 (try_cast.sql): try_cast
uses the exact (toLongExact) parser, so a fraction is malformed rather
than dropped. The kernel used the legacy parser for Try mode.

Spark's checkLimitLikeClause raises INVALID_LIMIT_LIKE_EXPRESSION.IS_NEGATIVE
and .IS_NULL for a foldable count; LIMIT -1 used to reach the physical
planner as INTERNAL_ERROR (limit.sql). The checks live in their own
non-inlined function so the resolver's recursive frame does not grow.

…tchet (P2-T100a)

- golden::session_engine: an Engine over krishiv-session (fresh session
per run with the file's configs and fixture tables; SET/RESET mirrored
into the session; rows rendered by golden::cell from the result's Spark
types; sortedness from the analyzed plan; per-statement time limit).
- The runner records each statement's outcome and why it failed.
- tests/spark-golden/known-failures.json: every statement of the Spark
4.2 suite that does not pass, with a category (unsupported feature with
its plan task, divergence with ADR 0023, or bug with its owner) and the
classification rules (golden::classify) used to seed new entries.
- golden_ratchet test: the full suite must fail exactly the listed
statements; a new failure fails CI and a listed statement that passes
must be removed. golden-report --ratchet check|update.
- The file-level exclusion manifest is frozen (no exclusions).

First full run: parse 14025/18827, negative 629/3857, result 966/15363.

Walkthrough

The change tightens string-to-integral casts and validates foldable LIMIT values. It also adds session-backed golden execution, statement-level failure reporting, failure classification, and a frozen known-failures baseline with CLI check and update operations.

Changes: String-to-integral casts

Layer / File(s) Summary
Strict parsing and cast expectations
crates/krishiv-kernels/src/cast.rs, crates/krishiv-kernels/tests/casts.rs
Non-legacy string-to-integral casts use strict parsing. Tests check that fractional inputs return NULL in Try mode and whitespace-padded integers still parse.

LIMIT analysis

Layer / File(s) Summary
LIMIT validation
crates/krishiv-plan/src/analyzer/resolve.rs, crates/krishiv-sql/tests/analyzer.rs
The LIMIT branch uses a helper that rejects non-INT expressions and foldable null or negative counts. Tests cover negative and null limits and confirm that zero succeeds.

Golden-test execution and ratchet

Layer / File(s) Summary
Session execution and statement diagnostics
crates/krishiv-testkit/Cargo.toml, crates/krishiv-testkit/src/golden/run.rs, crates/krishiv-testkit/src/golden/session_engine.rs
The session engine runs statements with fixtures, configuration handling, and timeouts. The runner records original statement indices and failure details, including parse, execution, and result mismatches.
Failure classification and baseline
crates/krishiv-testkit/src/golden/classify.rs, crates/krishiv-testkit/src/golden/known_failures.rs, tests/spark-golden/known-failures.json, tests/spark-golden/exclusions.json
Classification rules match failures against configured conditions. The versioned baseline validates, checks, and updates statement exclusions; the Spark manifest records categories, rules, and case indices, and the exclusions manifest is frozen.
CLI reporting and ratchet integration
crates/krishiv-testkit/src/golden/mod.rs, crates/krishiv-testkit/src/golden/report.rs, crates/krishiv-testkit/src/bin/golden-report.rs, crates/krishiv-testkit/tests/golden_*, crates/krishiv-testkit/CLAUDE.md, xtask/src/main.rs
The CLI adds session-engine selection, failed-case JSON output, and baseline check or update modes. Tests cover the options and frozen-baseline run; usage text and documentation describe the commands and ratchet behavior.

Priority: Normal

Estimated code review effort: 4 (Complex) | ~60 minutes

Merge Risk: Moderate · up to 4fd34

The cast and LIMIT changes are mostly sound, but LIMIT validation still accepts negative counts written as arithmetic expressions. The golden ratchet can also fail on slow CI runners and mis-handle RESET. Address these before relying on the frozen baseline as a CI gate.

Security architecture risk: Low · up to 4fd34

The new execution path is confined to local test tooling and CI. It can read files accessible to the running process, but the inspected default path rejects write commands, remote storage schemes, and credential-bearing paths. No introduced production-facing security issue was established; CI filesystem isolation remains unverified.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The established exposure is local file-read authority under the CLI or CI process identity. The inspected consumers use repository-local golden inputs; no production tenant boundary or privilege elevation was established.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The inspected default SQL dispatcher rejects non-query commands, including SQL writes. File resolution rejects non-file schemes and credential-bearing paths, limiting the new SQL execution path without making it a general-purpose sandbox.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — If the runner is later used for externally supplied SQL, execute it with a restricted filesystem view and without sensitive credentials. The current local-file authority should not be treated as an isolation boundary.

Bare RESET now unsets every key set earlier in the session (it left SET
keys behind), and RESET key matches base keys case-insensitively, as the
session does; a test fails without the fix. The LIMIT 0 analyzer test
now asserts the resolved Limit holds the literal 0.

Main now runs SET through Session::sql, so the session-engine test
asserts the command succeeds and reaches the session's conf instead of
a parse error. Re-record the frozen baseline: 2903 statements main
fixed leave the list; cte#24 (an unused CTE over a missing relation no
longer raises TABLE_OR_VIEW_NOT_FOUND) joins the analyzer bug category,
and two statements that now depend on SET handling move category.

Main's analyzer folder (#143) supersedes this branch's LIMIT-count
folding: keep main's fold.rs and limit checks and its regexp/ntile
expectations; this branch's LIMIT analyzer tests pass on it. Two more
statements now pass and leave the frozen baseline.
