testkit, io: per-category golden baseline; isolate the coalesce benchmark - #262
Golden baseline split per category (krishiv-testkit): the classification categories and their rules move from the single tests/spark-golden/known-failures.json into one file per category under tests/spark-golden/known-failures-categories/. Each rule carries an order; rules are tried in ascending order across all files. known-failures.json keeps only the format version, Spark tag and freeze date. Two PRs touching different categories no longer edit the same file. The loader validates category/file name agreement, format versions and rule order; the legacy single-file form still parses for unit tests. The golden-category skill and crate docs describe the new layout.
Benchmark isolation (krishiv-io): io/coalesce_10k_ranges moves to its own bench target (benches/coalesce.rs) so allocator state from the Parquet benchmarks cannot affect it. The benchmark body is unchanged. CodSpeed will likely show it as removed plus a new benchmark and its history restarts; this is a move, not a regression or a deletion.
Tests
cargo nextest run -p krishiv-testkit -p krishiv-io: 600 passed.
The golden ratchet passes against the split baseline; a new test checks the checked-in files are in canonical form.
The golden baseline kept the failure categories and the classification rules of every category in one aggregate, tests/spark-golden/known-failures.json, next to the per-file cases directory. Any PR that added a category or a rule edited that one file, so it conflicted with every other PR doing the same.
The aggregate is now split like the cases already were. known-failures.json holds only the format version, the Spark tag and the freeze date. known-failures-categories/<category>.json holds one category and the rules that assign it. Each rule carries an order; rules are tried in ascending order across all files (ties by category key, then position), so the old list order is kept and gaps of 10 leave room to insert.
The loader reads the directory in sorted order, validates that a file names its own category and numbers every rule, and keeps the legacy single-document form that the unit tests parse. Update mode writes only the files whose bytes change and deletes a category file when no failure of that category is left. The ratchet rule is unchanged: a newly failing statement fails, a listed statement that now passes must be removed. The migrated baseline is identical to the old one (28 categories and 50 rules in the same match order; 11769 listed statements, 0 added, 0 removed), and a new test fails when any checked-in per-key file differs from what update mode would write, so a stale or hand-edited file is caught without running the whole suite.
Measured over the last 40 merged PRs of main (#204 to #261), files changed by more than 25% of them (more than 10 of 40), excluding Cargo.lock:
12/40 crates/krishiv-plan/src/analyzer/exprs.rs
That file is hand-edited source, not generated, so it is not changed here. The next tier, below the threshold, includes the files this change and the follow-ups target:
9/40 python/krishiv/sql/_generated_functions.py
9/40 python/krishiv/sql/_generated_functions.pyi
9/40 python/tests/_pyspark_signatures.py
9/40 crates/krishiv-functions/src/python_wrappers/table.rs
9/40 crates/krishiv-functions/src/registry/defs.rs
8/40 tests/spark-golden/known-failures.json (split here)
7/40 crates/krishiv-plan-codec/src/features.rs

Move the benchmark out of the io binary so allocator state left
by the Parquet encode/scan benchmarks cannot swing it, keeping
the io group and benchmark names so CodSpeed history is kept.
Input ranges are built once outside the timed loop.

Walkthrough
The known-failure baseline now separates metadata, category rules, and cases, with legacy parsing retained. A new Criterion target benchmarks range coalescing independently of the existing I/O benchmarks.
Changes: Golden Baseline Storage
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Split baseline loading and rule ordering crates/krishiv-testkit/src/golden/classify.rs, crates/krishiv-testkit/src/golden/known_failures.rs
Rule now has an order field. The loader validates category files, orders rules across files, and falls back to parsing the legacy format when the category directory is absent.
Split baseline serialization and updates crates/krishiv-testkit/src/golden/known_failures.rs
Serialization emits metadata separately from category files. Updates synchronize category and case directories. Tests cover validation, round trips, updates, and removal of unused files.
Checked-in categories and format documentation tests/spark-golden/known-failures.json, tests/spark-golden/known-failures-categories/*, crates/krishiv-testkit/CLAUDE.md, crates/krishiv-testkit/src/bin/golden-report.rs, crates/krishiv-testkit/src/manifest_dir.rs, crates/krishiv-testkit/tests/golden_ratchet.rs, .claude/skills/krishiv-golden-category/SKILL.md
The baseline metadata file no longer contains category definitions or rules. Per-category files now hold category definitions and ordered rules. Documentation describes the split format.
A separate Criterion target benchmarks coalescing 10,000 ranges. The existing I/O benchmark no longer includes the coalescing helper or case, and the documented command targets both benchmarks.
KrishivAI/krishiv-engine#154: Introduced KnownFailures, classification rules, baseline loading, and ratchet updates extended by this change.
KrishivAI/krishiv-engine#251: Changed analyzer behavior and corresponding Spark golden baseline entries that this change migrates.
KrishivAI/krishiv-engine#44: Introduced coalesce and its benchmark, which this change moves to a separate target.
Merge Risk: Low · previous review ef67f
A failed baseline update may leave the golden tests with incomplete failure data, though the checked-in baseline can be restored. The benchmark instructions also omit a target that the command runs. These are bounded risks that can be addressed with owner follow-up.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to ef67f
The change primarily affects test tooling. A legacy baseline can redirect new category-file writes outside the intended directory during an explicit update. Impact is limited to generated JSON written with the invoking user's permissions; no remote or privileged exposure is established.
Retained concerns
Low · security · observed: Legacy category identifiers now carry filesystem authority without confinement. When no category directory exists, a valid legacy baseline can retain a category such as ../other; update_file converts it directly into a path and can create or overwrite generated JSON outside known-failures-categories. Filename agreement protects split loading, not this migration path. Exploitation requires an explicit update and a retained malicious category, and remains bounded by the caller's filesystem permissions.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The demonstrated exposure is local filesystem mutation under the invoking process's permissions. The CLI defaults ratchet mode to off and requires explicit update selection. Escaped targets receive generated category JSON with an appended .json suffix, not unrestricted file contents. Remote, tenant-crossing, credential, or privileged consumers are not established.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — The split loader binds each category to its file and injects that ownership into its rules. Legacy parsing validates category definitions and rule references but does not constrain category keys as paths. The new writer therefore gives legacy data authority not covered by the split loader's identity check.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — Unclassified failures stop updates before filesystem writes. Check mode propagates loader errors, and active failures absent from the loaded case set are newly failing. The integration ratchet also rejects failed files and timeouts, providing counterevidence to a silent enforcement bypass from missing baseline entries.

Full details: Title check
Explanation
The title names both main parts of the changeset: the per-category golden baseline split in krishiv-testkit and the coalesce benchmark isolation in krishiv-io. It is specific, follows the title convention, and is about 73 characters. It does not describe the loader, the validation rules, or the CodSpeed effect, but those are details, not the primary change.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description covers the required content. It explains what changed and why for the golden baseline split and the benchmark move, and it lists the test commands and their results. It also states that the golden ratchet passes and that checks were run. The template asks for linked task, spec, and ADR references under Summary, and the description has none. The checklist items, the performance review, and the Rust API guideline items are not addressed. The Tests section pastes summary lines rather than full command output, and the 600-pass count is stated without the raw result line. These gaps are non-critical, so the description is mostly complete.
