What

Typed datetime literals are now supported: TIMESTAMP '...', TIMESTAMP_LTZ '...', TIMESTAMP_NTZ '...' and DATE '...'. Before this change, TIMESTAMP '...' was rejected.

  • Parsing and lowering: the SQL lowering keeps the keyword and the raw string as an unresolved TypedLiteral expression node.
  • Analyzer:
    • resolves the literal to a constant Literal, once at analysis time and never per row;
    • uses the existing string-to-datetime cast kernels, so parsing rules are the same as for CAST('...' AS TIMESTAMP); there is no second datetime parser;
    • plain TIMESTAMP follows spark.sql.timestampType; a value with an explicit zone stays an instant, detected from the kernel's own parse result;
    • values without a zone are read in spark.sql.session.timeZone.
  • Output column names (TIMESTAMP '2024-01-01 10:00:00') are rendered with the cast-to-string kernels in the session zone.
  • Session-zone parsing: the fixed-offset parser (FixedOffset::parse in the cast kernels) is now shared by the analyzer and the expression evaluator, instead of each keeping a copy.

Why

Typed literals are standard Spark SQL and common in queries. Without them, users had to fall back to CAST(... AS TIMESTAMP_NTZ).

Spark compatibility

  • Malformed text raises INVALID_TYPED_LITERAL with value/valueType at the literal's position.
  • Spark 4.2.0 golden statements checked:
    • literals.sql: DATE/TIMESTAMP names, types and invalid literals;
    • timestamp.sql: tab-trailing value, invalid values;
    • timestamp-ntz.sql and timestampNTZ/timestamp.sql;
    • timestamp-ltz.sql.

Tests

  • Parser tests per literal form, analyzer tests (type per spark.sql.timestampType, the session zone, error positions), the golden statements above, and a session test.
  • The session test covers: a default session, a +05:30 session (value and name), and an explicit-zone value whose name renders in the session zone.
  • FixedOffset::parse has a unit test (offsets, region ids, malformed and out-of-range values).
  • The kernels, plan, sql, session and exec suites pass.

Known divergences / not included

  • Unset session zone: literals are read as UTC. Spark uses the JVM's local zone. Separately, CAST('...' AS TIMESTAMP) still reports an unsupported feature when the session zone is unset.
  • Region-id session zones (e.g. America/Los_Angeles) need the time-zone database. A literal without a zone reports KRISHIV_UNSUPPORTED_FEATURE there, as casts do.
  • Clock-dependent spellings (now, today, a bare time of day) report KRISHIV_UNSUPPORTED_FEATURE.
  • TIME '...' and INTERVAL '...' typed literals are not included; there are no IR types for them yet.

Spark accepts TIMESTAMP '...', TIMESTAMP_LTZ '...', TIMESTAMP_NTZ '...'
and DATE '...' typed literals. Krishiv parsed them but rejected the
TIMESTAMP forms when lowering, forcing workarounds with CAST instead.

Parsing stays in the existing literal grammar. Lowering now evaluates
timestamp literals once at analysis time through the same CAST
string-to-timestamp kernels execution uses, so parsing rules match CAST.
Plain TIMESTAMP follows spark.sql.timestampType (without a zone it is
TIMESTAMP_NTZ, with a zone it stays an instant) and instants without a
zone read spark.sql.session.timeZone. The result is a constant Literal,
never a per-row cast. Malformed text fails with INVALID_TYPED_LITERAL
at the literal span; clock-dependent spellings (now, today, bare times)
and region zones needing the tz database stay
KRISHIV_UNSUPPORTED_FEATURE, as the kernels report.

Output names now render timestamp literals as Spark does
(TIMESTAMP '...' / TIMESTAMP_NTZ '...').

Unverified: region-zone session rows against the goldens (the engine has
no tz database, as for CASTs); TIME and INTERVAL typed forms remain
unsupported, as the IR has no such types.

Parser produces an unresolved TypedLiteral node only (type keyword plus
raw string); no evaluation, no time zone and no ParserOptions or
fingerprint changes there.

The analyzer lowers DATE, TIMESTAMP, TIMESTAMP_NTZ and TIMESTAMP_LTZ to
a constant Literal with the string-to-date/timestamp cast kernels and
the session-resolved zone (spark.sql.session.timeZone, default UTC when
unset, the same default the cast path uses) and timestamp type
(spark.sql.timestampType decides plain TIMESTAMP, with an explicit zone
in the value staying an instant). Zone detection uses the kernel parse
result via timestamp_has_zone, not double casting. Clock-dependent
spellings and region zones stay KRISHIV_UNSUPPORTED_FEATURE; malformed
text is INVALID_TYPED_LITERAL with the literal position.

Output names use the cast-to-string kernels in the session zone; the
hand-written UTC formatter is removed.

The analyzer and the expression evaluator each carried a copy of the fixed-offset zone parser. Both now use FixedOffset::parse next to the zone type in the cast kernels, so typed literals and casts read spark.sql.session.timeZone the same way.

Walkthrough

SQL lowering now preserves DATE, TIMESTAMP, TIMESTAMP_NTZ, and TIMESTAMP_LTZ literals for analyzer resolution. The analyzer applies timestamp configuration and session-zone settings to interpret and render values. Shared fixed-offset parsing and timestamp-zone detection support this flow.

Changes: Typed datetime literals and session-zone handling

Layer / File(s) Summary
Fixed-offset parsing and session configuration
crates/krishiv-kernels/src/cast/datetime.rs, crates/krishiv-kernels/src/cast/timestamp.rs, crates/krishiv-kernels/src/cast.rs, crates/krishiv-exec/src/planner/eval/mod.rs, crates/krishiv-plan/src/analyzer/mod.rs, crates/krishiv-plan/src/tests/analyzer.rs
A shared parser recognizes supported fixed offsets, and timestamp_has_zone detects explicit timestamp zones. ResolutionConf reads the timestamp type and session zone settings. The execution planner uses the shared offset parser.
Typed literal representation and SQL lowering
crates/krishiv-plan/src/expr.rs, crates/krishiv-plan/src/lib.rs, crates/krishiv-sql/src/lower.rs, crates/krishiv-plan/src/display.rs, crates/krishiv-plan/src/encode.rs, crates/krishiv-plan/src/walk.rs, crates/krishiv-plan/src/tests/*, crates/krishiv-sql/src/tests.rs
The plan adds a typed-literal expression form. SQL lowering retains datetime keywords and raw values instead of parsing them into concrete values. Plan traversal, display, encoding, and tests handle the new expression form.
Analyzer resolution and zone-aware rendering
crates/krishiv-plan/src/analyzer/*, crates/krishiv-sql/tests/analyzer.rs, crates/krishiv-session/tests/session.rs
The analyzer resolves typed datetime literals using their kind, timestamp configuration, explicit zone, and session zone. It reports invalid literals and unsupported inputs with the specified errors. Expression rendering uses session-zone settings where applicable; tests cover analyzer and session behavior.

Possibly related PRs

  • KrishivAI/krishiv-engine#180: Changes Spark-style rendering for typed literals and timestamps, which overlaps with this PR’s literal formatting and output-name rendering.
Merge Risk: Low · up to 10829

Malformed session offsets can be accepted inconsistently, and an invalid DATE literal reports the wrong error. These are bounded issues, but the offset validation and test assertions should be corrected before relying on the new behavior.

Security architecture risk: Low · up to 10829

The change affects SQL semantics across parsing, analysis, and execution. The reviewed paths preserve execution guards and configuration-aware reuse, with no demonstrated new privilege or access-control bypass. Remaining uncertainty and compatibility limitations warrant a low rather than minimal assessment.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The demonstrated new reachability is from user-supplied SQL literal text and session settings into analysis-time conversion, output naming, and downstream constant evaluation. The inspected conversion path does not introduce catalog, filesystem, network, or identity authority.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The syntax-to-execution transition retains two controls: typed literals must bind successfully into concrete values, and unresolved logical roots are rejected before physical planning. The new representation does not itself grant execution eligibility.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — A later conversion failure or interruption does not publish an earlier partially converted plan through the inspected analysis path. Replacement expressions and resolver state are local, and both analyzed-plan construction and session-cache publication follow successful completion.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title names the main change: typed datetime literals (TIMESTAMP, TIMESTAMP_LTZ, TIMESTAMP_NTZ, DATE) resolved in the analyzer. The changeset matches this: the SQL lowering keeps typed literals unresolved, the analyzer resolves them, and tests cover both. The title is long at 107 characters, but it stays specific and on-topic.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description follows the template's main sections. It has a What section, a Why section, Spark compatibility notes, Tests, and a list of known divergences. The Checklist and Performance review sections are missing. The Tests section does not paste the commands run and their result lines, which the template asks for. The 'Task / spec / ADRs' line is also absent, and no link to a P2-Txxx task is given. The description states that the kernels, plan, sql, session and exec suites pass, but gives no command output. The author should add the commands and result lines, the task or spec reference, and confirm the checklist items (DCO sign-off, SPDX headers, Spark error class registry use, Rust API guideline items, and performance review).

Resolution

Add the task, spec, and ADR references under 'Task / spec / ADRs'. Paste the exact test commands and their result lines under 'Tests run' instead of a summary claim. Complete or mark the checklist items, including the Rust API Guidelines section for the new public items (TypedLiteralKind, ExprNode::TypedLiteral, FixedOffset::parse, timestamp_has_zone, and the new ResolutionConf fields), and the performance review items, since the analyzer changes touch per-row evaluation paths. Also state whether the change adds any dependency.

Strict session-zone parsing to 1-2 ASCII digits per field with the
total capped at 18 hours. DATE with time-only text reports
INVALID_TYPED_LITERAL. Session-zone tests assert exact timestamp
micros for both zones. Manifests updated for timestamp literals
that now resolve.

Main's new LIMIT/OFFSET and canonicalisation code renders expressions
with the one-argument pretty; pass the session zone there as the rest
of the resolver does. Two more registry-matrix cases pass (date_part
over a TIMESTAMP literal now folds), recorded in the manifest.

Main's output names (#180) render literals through spark_fmt; keep that
and render a TIMESTAMP literal's name in the session zone, as this
branch does, so the cast-to-string helpers are no longer needed.

Main's name tests resolve DATE '999999-03-18', which Spark accepts: a
DATE literal now skips the timestamp-grammar shape check (its instant
is past the microsecond range) and is checked by its own date cast; a
bare time of day is still INVALID_TYPED_LITERAL. Registry-matrix
manifest re-recorded.
