plan-codec: named feature flags instead of sequential format versions (P2-T173b) - #193
crates/krishiv-plan-codec/src/features.rs: an alphabetically sorted registry (expand, limit_offset, window), feature_of with exhaustive matches over node kinds, project items, join types, partitionings, window and aggregate functions, and ReaderFeatures.
Decode checks the epoch (UnsupportedEpoch) and the features (UnsupportedFeatures { missing }) before reading a node. A construct whose feature the header does not declare, or a declared feature the plan does not use, is Corrupt. features_of reads only the header. The number of feature ids in a header is bounded.
Plans without an epoch (format versions 1 to 5) take the legacy path: their features follow from their content, and the min_reader_version gate still applies. format_version stays frozen at 5. Features added from now on have legacy level 6, so a reader that predates features refuses them.
Goldens: base/ plus one directory per feature, byte-exact against the encoder. v1 to v5 are decode-only.
The decoder's protobuf enum matches have no wildcard arms.
tools/plan-protogen --check requires a // feature: <id> or // ignorable comment on every schema element added from now on. baseline.txt lists the existing elements.
Tests
Feature coverage: every inventory case encodes the expected feature set.
Registry hygiene: sorted, unique, snake_case, disjoint from RETIRED, and every feature has a golden directory.
Older readers simulated in-process: for every golden and every subset of its features, decode succeeds exactly when the plan's features are a subset, and otherwise names the missing ones.
Honesty: a header with a feature stripped or added is Corrupt.
Legacy: v1 to v5 decode to their inventory plans.
Local checks: cargo xtask precheck (clippy, doc, fmt, policy, pr-size) and plan-protogen --check pass. Diff coverage of the codec is 93.8% (289 of 308 lines).
…via Expand
Spark's ResolveGroupingAnalytics shape: an Expand plan node (plan data,
streamed one copy per projection) feeds an ordinary aggregate. Adds the
DataFrame rollup/cube/grouping_sets, Spark golden tests, optimizer
cases and commutative semantic keys.

Integrates the window functions, OFFSET, the resolver's small-stack
helpers and the CTE and alias fixes with the grouping-sets analyzer and
the Expand node. Expand takes encoder tag 24 in the plan identity
encoding (OFFSET 22, Window 23). The plan codec returns Unsupported for
Expand and NullOf until the codec commit that follows.

PhysNode::Expand (ROLLUP, CUBE, GROUPING SETS) and the NullOf project item
it uses made the codec's matches non-exhaustive. The proto gains ExpandNode
(layout, projections, nullability, subqueries), ExpandProjection and
ProjectNullOf. The writer format version becomes 5. A plan raises its
min_reader_version to 5 only when it holds an Expand or a NullOf item, so
other plans stay readable by older readers and an older reader never meets a
node it does not know.
The decoder refuses an expand without a projection and a projection whose
item count differs from the nullability list. The v1 to v4 goldens still
decode; the v5 goldens add three Expand shapes (a rollup with a grouping
id, a single projection, a computed column beside a nulled one with a
subquery). The TPC-DS ratchet shrinks by the four grouping-set queries
(q05, q14, q18, q22) that now plan and round-trip.

A plan now lists the named features it uses (sorted string ids) and its
wire epoch. A reader checks the epoch and the features before it reads a
node, names any it lacks, and refuses a header that does not match the
plan's constructs, so the header can be read on its own (features_of).
- features.rs: the sorted registry (limit_offset, window), feature_of
with exhaustive matches over node kinds, project items, join types,
partitionings, window and aggregate functions, and ReaderFeatures.
- format_version is frozen at 5; min_reader_version keeps working for
readers that predate features (new features use level 6). Plans
without an epoch decode by their content.
- Goldens: base/ and one directory per feature, byte-exact; v1-v4 frozen.
- The decoder maps protobuf enums without wildcards.
- plan-protogen --check requires a compatibility-class comment on every
schema element added from now on (baseline.txt lists the others).

The plan codec now uses epoch and feature headers for compatibility checks. It derives feature metadata during encoding, validates headers and reader support during decoding, and adds tooling to check proto compatibility annotations.

The codec derives features from plan constructs and writes feature IDs, the epoch, and a derived legacy reader level into encoded plans.

Decoding checks header structure, epoch, declared features, and reader support. It rejects unknown or unspecified enum values instead of mapping them to defaults.

Protogen checks schema classifications against the baseline and feature registry. CI documents the annotation rule and runs the protogen tests.
Codec tests and compatibility guidance crates/krishiv-plan-codec/tests/*, crates/krishiv-plan-codec/CLAUDE.md
Tests cover feature headers, legacy decoding, reader feature sets, and feature-based goldens. Guidance describes the compatibility rules and related checks.
Reject unsupported legacy format versions so future or malformed plans are not misclassified and decoded under legacy rules.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to 7f534
The checked decoding path continues to reject unsupported or inconsistent plans and enforce resource limits. Remaining uncertainty concerns downstream reliance on header-only metadata and mixed-version deployment behavior.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The directly assessed attack surface is caller-supplied serialized plan data entering the codec. Compatibility declarations do not themselves grant execution authority; the documented coordinator-to-worker architecture supplies worker resources separately. Actual external admission and execution integration was not available for verification.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — Full decoding rejects unsupported epochs and features, bounds feature identifiers and declaration count, and rejects malformed, repeated, or unsorted declarations. Missing required declarations and unused declarations are rejected before a plan is returned.
observed — The legacy header does not reject format_version values above 5 when the minimum reader level is acceptable. The same version-gating behavior exists at the PR base, so this is not evidence of an introduced compatibility-control bypass.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — The byte-oriented decode API retains a size check before protobuf parsing. Plan reconstruction also bounds node and expression tables and depth, preserving resource-containment controls alongside the new compatibility checks.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Clarify that current-epoch features_of output is unvalidated body metadata, not proof of plan validity or authorization. Future admission or restore integrations should retain full decoding before execution or other privileged effects.

The header fields (features, epoch) and PlanHeader are ignorable, since
readers that predate features check min_reader_version; they leave the
pre-annotation baseline so --check requires their annotations. Feature
ids come only from the registry! invocation, not from look-alike lines
elsewhere in features.rs.

Reject unsupported legacy format versions.
When epoch == 0, header accepts any nonzero format_version if ids is empty and min_reader_version <= FORMAT_VERSION. A header with format_version > 5 can therefore be classified as Header::Legacy, although legacy plans are limited to format versions 1–5. This lets an out-of-contract header pass validation and be decoded with legacy rules.
