Summary

Since v0.9.2 the dashboard login captcha always fails ("Verification failed. Try again later.", console Challenge validation failed.), which locks admins out of instances with the login captcha on — including gatecha.clicface.fr.

Cause: Dependabot (#207/#215) moved the bundled widget from altcha 3.2.4 to 3.4.0. 3.4.0's isChallengeV1 is

return typeof !!challenge && challenge === "object" && "challenge" in challenge;

which compares the challenge object to the string "object", so a v1 challenge (what GateCHA serves) is never recognised and is rejected. 3.4.1 (2026-10-19) fixes it; only 3.4.0 is affected. This pins the minimal fix, 3.4.1.

Verification

  • Reproduced with the published ghcr.io/upellift99/gatecha:0.9.4: widget → "Verification failed".
  • Binary built from this branch, login captcha on: widget → Verified, and a full captcha login lands on / with the token stored.
  • npm test (188) and npm run build pass.

Follow-up worth considering

Unit tests mock altcha, so a widget regression like this passes CI. A small real-browser smoke test of the login captcha would catch the next one.

Since v0.9.2 the dashboard login captcha always fails with "Verification
failed. Try again later." (console: "Challenge validation failed.").
Dependabot moved the bundled widget from altcha 3.2.4 to 3.4.0, whose
isChallengeV1 reads

    typeof !!challenge && challenge === "object" && ...

so it compares the challenge object to the string "object" and never
recognises a v1 challenge, which is what GateCHA serves. 3.4.1 fixes the
check (`challenge !== null && typeof challenge === "object"`); 3.3.0 and
3.2.4 never had the bug.

Reproduced against the published v0.9.4 image and fixed on a binary built
from this branch: the widget reaches "Verified" and a full captcha login
lands on the dashboard. npm test (188) and npm run build pass.
