Fixes ENG-1367

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added the decompress_like SQL function to search plain or compressed blob contents with LIKE-style patterns and an optional starting offset.
    • Searches can process blob data as a stream rather than loading the full contents into memory.
    • Added incremental blob access for reading data by position or through a reader.
    • Pattern matching is case-insensitive. _ matches one character, % matches a sequence of characters, and backslashes can escape pattern characters.

ENG-1367 Streaming sqlite decompress

Filtering compressed data (WHERE clauses) loads the entire uncompressed record into memory instead of searching in chunks.

We should expose a custom SQLite function (e.g., clike) utilizing the SQLite Blob API to enable streaming/chunked pattern matching (similar to LIKE) without loading full payloads into RAM.

Walkthrough

The pull request adds SQLite BLOB access and a streaming LIKE matcher. It registers a six-argument decompress_like SQL function that searches selected plain or framed BLOB data.

Changes: SQLite BLOB LIKE search

Layer / File(s) Summary
Compile and stream LIKE matches
Cargo.toml, crates/matcher/**, .mise/tasks/matcher/*, .github/workflows/validate.yml
Adds LIKE pattern conversion and streaming matching. Adds matcher package validation tasks and includes the package in the Clippy and test matrices.
Add SQLite BLOB access
crates/sqlite-ffi/src/blob.rs, crates/sqlite-ffi/src/context/mod.rs, crates/sqlite-ffi/src/error.rs, crates/sqlite-ffi/src/function.rs, crates/sqlite-ffi/src/lib.rs
Adds a borrowed BLOB handle with offset and sequential reads, and exports SqliteBlob. Adds Context::result_int64 and a shared SQLite database error constructor.
Search and register decompress_like
sqlite-compress/Cargo.toml, sqlite-compress/src/functions/like/*, sqlite-compress/src/functions/mod.rs, sqlite-compress/src/lib.rs, .mise/tasks/sqlite-compress/*
Adds the optional like feature and registers decompress_like. The function opens a BLOB, compiles or reuses a matcher, searches plain or framed data, and returns a boolean.

Merge Risk: Moderate · up to ceb4c

Queries over columns containing unsupported cell types can fail instead of returning a match result, so this behavior should be addressed before merge.

Security architecture risk: Moderate · up to ceb4c

The feature is opt-in and reads data without modifying it. However, its streaming decoder does not enforce the stored decompressed-length bound used by the existing decompression function. If attacker-controlled compressed rows reach a non-matching search, processing can exceed that bound and consume excessive host resources. Deployment exposure and interruption behavior remain unverified.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · inferred: The new framed-BLOB search bypasses the declared decompressed-length bound used by existing decompress. A structurally valid stored frame can declare a small length while containing substantially more decoded content; a pattern that never matches makes the streaming path continue processing that content without a decoded-byte budget. Where untrusted writers can supply compressed rows later searched by a trusted application, this can amplify resource consumption in the extension host. Incremental buffering limits materialization, but does not bound total decoding work. Exploitability and cancellation latency have not been runtime-verified.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The identified availability path requires a build enabling like and invocation against attacker-influenced compressed content. Its immediate execution scope is the SQLite extension host processing the selected BLOB. No remote ingress, tenant distribution, or deployment-wide exposure was established.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — A writer able to store a valid compressed payload exceeding its declared original length can cause a later non-matching search to decode beyond that declared bound. Existing bulk decompression uses the declared length as its capacity; the new streaming consumer does not. Early matches reduce work, but do not protect searches that must reach EOF.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The callback uses the invoking connection and read-only BLOB access. Function registration supplies SQLITE_UTF8 without a direct-only restriction, and the callback contains no separate object-access policy. These facts establish the interface's authority surface, not an authorization bypass; effective SQLite authorizer and schema-trust policies remain unresolved.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Prepared dictionaries reside in a process-wide cache keyed by schema name and dictionary ID, although misses load bytes from the current connection. This identity mismatch predates the PR, and existing decompress already uses the same cache. The new search inherits it, but a distinct increase in cross-database exposure was not established.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Define and enforce a decoded-byte/work budget for streaming searches, preserving the framed-length constraint where appropriate. Validate interruption and retry behavior so incremental buffering is not mistaken for bounded execution cost.

@Sytten i was thinking to introduce an other sqlite function decompres_regexp (does stream for both zstd and blob read), on the backend we keep reglite to work on regular data and call decompres_regexp on compress data ?

We dont particularly like that the sqlite like is only case insensitive on ascii. I guess this mirrors the behaviour but we have had bug reports to improve that. We probably need some httpql enhancement.

You're talking about that issue right ?

What can we do now is to remove the make_ascii_lowercase, than i can go for option 2 disable case sensitive in sqlite as well. Than will need to update HTTPQL documentation too

Technically if we do case insensitive then we need make_ascii_lowercase or an equivalent in utf-8.
I would not make is it case-sensitive by default, but we might want to add a system in httpql like req.body.cont:s#"Hello World" to force casing. Otherwise we can just say to use regex if they want case sensitiveness. We do need to support flag in regex for things like caido/caido#1314.

@Michelprogram That is fine, reglite replaces the regex operator anyway and this function would be different. Probably a feature flag on the compress crate
