feat(personas)!: add grounded writing and enforce authored traits - #576
Conversation
BREAKING CHANGE: adapt_personality now refuses honesty and emotionality with operator_only even when the host has no learning layer. Set these traits in the authored persona definition. Editable-trait budgets and learning-layer step limits are unchanged.

…ithout learning The runtime's end-to-end case for the self-modification tools still said adapt_personality acts as before when the learning flag is off. Pin the operator_only refusal a model's call gets there for both authored traits, and correct the file's description.
…omments Replacing the dashes left stray commas, doubled spaces and a trailing space in the module and trait descriptions. Comments only.
…he readiness check expects
…our type-only names
The keyed runner was compiled only inside the labelled semantic job, and without --strict; the published-lock probe only in the dispatched post-release workflow; the release verifier nowhere, since it runs with type stripping. The deterministic Personas job now compiles all three in its strict declaration check, on every pull request push and on master, and the semantic job's own check passes --strict as well.
…ates it The first grounded control of the conditional-invoice fixture called the sending deadline unknown where the source says no deadline was agreed, a changed certainty the judge rightly rejected. Both accepted controls now restate the source's certainty: the payment's arrival date is unknown, and no sending deadline has been agreed.
… log The summary recorded only the error's name, so a failed acceptance read as Error with nothing on stdout; the summary and the step log now carry the message, which names the profile, fixture and case.
One attempt a call let any transient 503 among the run's roughly 250 calls fail the whole acceptance: run 39486114606 died at the fourteenth judgment on HTTP 503 Service Unavailable. Three attempts retry transient provider errors only, under the same spend cap; a judged failure is still final.
The malformed-judgment case answered every judgment with the malformed reply, so its first call, a grounded control, failed whatever the runner made of the reply: the case passed for a runner that read a malformed reply as a rejection, and for one that read it as an acceptance. The judge now answers the grounded controls and the generated answers with valid verdicts and gives the malformed reply to the planted controls only, and the run must stop on the reply itself rather than on a judged verdict.
… second control The second grounded control of the unowned-review fixture asked who will own the security review without saying the review is still needed, one of the fixture's required meanings, so a judge that reads completeness strictly could refuse the control and stop the run. The control now states it, as the first one does.
…grounded controls The judge rejected the second grounded control of the unowned-review fixture as incomplete because it never says the security review is still needed, which the fixture's required list demands, after passing it three times before. Both grounded controls now state each required meaning in the source's own words, so the controls no longer sit at the judge's margin.
… feat/notetaker-personality Both grounded controls of the unowned-review fixture keep the wording that states every required meaning; the review's second-control wording is superseded by it.
…s instructions Under the brief band the writer rendered Dana's stated plan to send the invoice after payment as the bullet 'Send the invoice only after payment arrives', and the judge rejected the directive as a changed obligation (run 39488943223, conscientiousness:low, after 88 passing judgments). The writer task now asks for plans and commitments as what was said will happen, never as instructions to the reader; the task stays the same for every profile.
…p the planted controls declarative The product's pack prompt asks for next steps written as the step itself, and the judge refused that form at random (runs 39486114606 and 39487714279). The rubric now says a plan or commitment the source states may be written as the step, keeping its meaning unless its actor, condition or certainty changes. The invoice fixture's planted controls open declaratively like its grounded controls, so a refusal names the planted change and never the mood.
…hed-package dispatch RELEASING.md documented only the breaking-approved label. It now says what the personas-semantic label runs and pays for, that a push or label change restarts that run, that the job is read rather than required, and that personas-published.yml is dispatched after a release with the version and the merge; CONTRIBUTING.md's cancellation sentence names the keyed run.

…rency group The keyed run keyed every attempt by the pull request with cancel-in-progress on, so re-running an older commit's attempt while the final head's run was going cancelled that run after its model calls had been paid for. A first attempt now keeps the pull request's group and cancels the run it supersedes; a re-run keys its own run id and cancels nothing, as personas.yml and the other pull request workflows already do.
…ift its guards AdaptPersonalityTool's refusal and the role-overlay rule both read OPERATOR_ONLY_TRAITS, which the public substrate entry exports. Its readonly type binds TypeScript callers only, so a JavaScript caller could run OPERATOR_ONLY_TRAITS.splice(0) and both guards would then let honesty and emotionality change. The array is now frozen at its definition, with the same public type. A test tries splice and push on the exported list, sees both throw and the list unchanged, and checks that both traits are still refused with operator_only on a host with and without a learning layer and still dropped from an overlay patch. The personas guide says the list is frozen.
verify-release.ts accepted any version above 0.13, so a 0.14.x patch that held the persona merge (a release whose breaking marker was lost on merge) passed the registry and tarball checks and became the consumer pin, and its message still named 0.13.165. The check now requires a new minor after the 0.14 line, 0.15.0 or later, and says so; the registry, tag ancestry and tarball checks are unchanged. A test runs the script as the dispatched workflow does, with every registry read answered 404 so it stays offline: 0.13.165 and 0.14.25 to 0.14.27 stop at the version check before the registry is read, and 0.15.0, 0.15.4 and 1.0.0 pass it and stop at the registry check. RELEASING.md names the floor, and the Personas step that runs the test names both checks.
…or writing renderPersonalitySection treated every register but the exact string 'writing' as conversation, so a JavaScript host that passed a misspelled or unchecked register got the conversation directives, which offer suggestions, and lost the grounding rule that keeps written output to its material, with nothing reported. A register left out still renders conversation, byte for byte as before; any other value now throws a TypeError naming it, before the traits are read. The writing-register tests pass bad values as a JavaScript caller would, and the personas guide states the refusal.
…ers every attempt Each writer and judge call took three attempts of up to 120 seconds each, but also an abort signal of 120 seconds for the whole call, and an abort ends a call with no further retry. A first attempt that timed out aborted the call at the same moment, and one that failed with a 5xx after about 110 seconds left its retry ten. Both calls now share one deadline of maxAttempts times requestTimeout plus 30 seconds for the waits between attempts, and requestTimeout still bounds each attempt.
personas-semantic.yml starts on opened, synchronize, reopened and labeled, so an edit or a removed label starts no run and cancels nothing; only a push or an added label restarts the keyed run. CONTRIBUTING.md said an edit or any label change did, and RELEASING.md said any label change did. Both now name a push or an added label, and CONTRIBUTING.md keeps the breaking-change gate's edits and label changes apart from it.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick winCorrect the pending-rerun guarantee.
Reruns use the

-The `personas-semantic` label runs [`personas-semantic.yml`](https://github.com/framerslab/agentos/blob/master/.github/workflows/personas-semantic.yml): the grounded-writing acceptance against real models (the writer `gpt-6.1-sol`, the judge `gpt-6-luna`), paid through the repository secret `OPENAI_API_KEY` and capped at 10 USD a run. Add the label once the branch is final: while it is on, any push, added label or branch update on the pull request restarts the run (its concurrency group cancels the unfinished first attempt; a re-run keys a group of its own, cancels nothing and is cancelled by nothing, so re-running an older commit's run spends a run's budget of its own), so read the run and its `personas-semantic-<sha>` artifact (`summary.json` and `records.jsonl`) on the final head before marking the pull request ready. On the outside-diff note about the re-run wording in RELEASING.md line 39: the sentence covers the case the resolved thread raised, a re-run beside a newer push, and it is right that a running re-run is cancelled by nothing. The corner it leaves out is two pending re-runs of the same run, where GitHub keeps only the newer pending one. That wording lands in a docs pull request right after this merge, because any push to this branch restarts the paid keyed acceptance. |
Summary
Add NOTETAKER_PERSONA and an explicit grounded writing register to the public cognition/substrate entry. Conversation remains the default with unchanged directive bytes. AdaptPersonalityTool uses the renderer's one operator-only list and refuses honesty and emotionality on hosts with and without learning.
Linked issues
Resolves #573, the notetaker writing-register issue opened before implementation, which tracks this API addition.
Type of change
How this was verified
Validation runs only in CI. Renderer, adaptation and public-entry tests were pushed red before implementation and then green. Native Node acceptance imports compiled exports without a source alias. The semantic runner covers every trait and band, the preset and two editable-trait corners; real writing and independent structured judgments cover grounded paraphrases, planted suggestions, changed ownership and reversed conditions. The synthetic output artifact was read against its sources. The keyed run makes 130 judgments: both grounded controls of each fixture once under the preset's section, both planted controls under every one of the 21 profiles for both fixtures, and one generated answer per profile and fixture. Missing credentials or model failures do not pass.
The published-package workflow verifies the actual registry version, gitHead, tag ancestry and tarball integrity, then imports and type-checks the isolated installed package and exercises both host locks before any product pin.
The tested head and its runs are listed at the end.
Migration notes
Set honesty and emotionality in the authored persona definition. Calls that previously adapted these traits without a learning layer now return operator_only before reads, writes, decay or budget use. Editable-trait budgets and learning limits remain unchanged. This behavior change requires a minor release after 0.14.25.
