Summary

A push, pull and rebase protocol for named text rows beside the cross-platform sync, in src/features/sync/mutations/ and exported from the ./sync entry. Nothing that exists changes: the module is new and the entry adds its exports.

  • counter.ts, wire.ts, rows.ts: decimal counters, the wire contract and its parsers, the row mutators (create, edit, delete, repair) with a deterministic copy policy settled by the server's order, and the save planner.
  • server.ts, sqlStore.ts, handOver.ts: MutationServer over a store port. Each client's mutation ids are recorded in the push's own transaction, a monotonic version is the pull cookie, a pull streams its patch in batches from one snapshot and can be cancelled, and deletes are replayed from tombstones. A pull still open maxPullMs after its call (default 120 seconds, its wait for a transaction included) is cancelled and its transaction rolled back, so a reader that stops reading cannot hold it. createSqlMutationStore is a reference store on the library's own tables.
  • gate.ts: DrainGate blocks a scope's requests, cancels the running ones and waits for them to leave.
  • client.ts, transport.ts, packing.ts: MutationClient with durable saves and a journal, the rebase, the pull's atomic apply, packed pushes split on a 413, joining, leaving, restore epochs with the journal's replay, removal with a backed-up check, unreadable repairs and a kept row put back. A value too long for the account stays in the browser under its row's id (an edit with the revision it was made against, so a save that fits edits the row there), and a value the server refused is kept under the id the client showed it at while the refusal was pending, in an ordinary pull and in the pull that ends a recovery. A join whose snapshot request fails turns the membership off again, as a refused one does. The client's counter columns are BIGINT, as wide as the protocol's counters on every database. createFetchMutationTransport stages a whole answer before reading it and reads Retry-After as seconds or as an HTTP date.
  • loop.ts, channel.ts: SyncLoop pushes then pulls at start, at once on a save, on becoming visible, on reconnecting and on sign-in, and every 60 seconds while the page is visible. A failed cycle is tried again after 2 seconds, doubling to 300. A rate refusal is waited as long as it asks, up to the longest wait a timer holds (2^31 - 1 ms), and no kick runs a cycle before that wait ends. stop() drops the wait and ends the run: a cycle still running schedules nothing of its own, even when the loop starts again before it ends, and start() begins the retries from 2 seconds. An error the onError listener throws leaves the retry in place. attachSyncLoop kicks the loop on the page's visibilitychange, focus and online events; changeChannel tells the page's other tabs of a commit through a BroadcastChannel where the page has one.

The server and client suites run on sql.js, better-sqlite3 and Postgres, and one client case keeps the client's own tables on each of them.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added mutation-based synchronization for shared data, including joining or leaving groups and keeping changes in sync across tabs.
    • Local edits that cannot be synced can be retained for later restoration.
    • Sync automatically retries after interruptions and responds to changes in connectivity or page activity.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Improved handling of conflicting edits, deletions, oversized changes, and unavailable or incomplete sync responses.
    • Better preservation of local changes when sync results are delayed, stale, or interrupted.

…e planner

tests/mutations/protocol.spec.ts: counters read back as safe
non-negative integers from decimal text, numbers and bigints, and
nothing else; a push whose ids rise from 1, and the pushes the wire
contract refuses (a stray key, a bad id, ids that do not rise, too many
mutations, an unknown name, bad arguments, none at all); a pull answer
that names a row twice, and a refused result with no reason. The row
mutators against a view of rows and recorded results: create, edit,
delete and repair with the copy policy, the copy id derived from the
group, the client and the mutation id, a dependent edit followed to its
earlier mutation's copy, a dependent delete or edit compared at the
revision an earlier no-op recorded, and unreadable rows and copies
counted toward the row limit. The save planner's creates, edits and
deletes, and a save that names a row id twice.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue #55 is open and directly linked. The new src/features/sync/mutations/ module implements the requested named-row protocol: ordered per-client mutation IDs in transactional pushes, monotonic pull cookies, snapshot-consistent batched streams, deterministic copies, restore epochs with a journal, and deletion drain gating. The module and tests also cover durable client commits, rebasing, refusals, recovery, joins, removal, and cross-tab change notification. The current head also contains the required existing support for IndexedDbAdapter commit durability, memoryOnly, reload(), Web Locks and stamp coordination, marker-backed migrateIndexedDbKeyValue, and paginated S3StorageProvider.list.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The whole-PR changes add the mutation-sync modules, export them from ./sync, and add their protocol, server, client, transport, loop, adapter, and recovery tests. These changes implement coding requirements in issue #55. The existing IndexedDB, migration, and S3 support is used as current-head evidence and is not an unrelated change introduced by this PR. No unrelated change is demonstrated.

Reviewer's Guide

Introduces comprehensive protocol-level tests for mutation synchronization, covering counter and wire validation, ordered row mutation outcomes, deterministic conflict copies, recovery of dependent mutations, deletion gates, repair semantics, capacity limits, and save planning.

File-Level Changes

Change Details Files
Adds the mutation protocol’s foundational validation, row-mutation semantics, deterministic conflict handling, and save planning.
  • Validate durable mutation counters and strictly shaped push/pull wire messages.
  • Implement create, edit, delete, and repair behavior across live, tombstone, and unreadable rows.
  • Resolve dependent mutations using recorded outcomes and deterministic copy identifiers.
  • Enforce row/value limits, revision checks, tombstone handling, and copy capacity accounting.
  • Plan edits, creates, and deletes by comparing persisted rows with the desired snapshot.

Assessment against linked issues

Issue Objective Addressed Explanation
#55 Add durable IndexedDB commit support for memory-only operation and reload recovery, along with cross-tab locking and resumable migration of legacy key-value records. ❌ The diff adds only mutation-protocol tests; it contains no IndexedDB adapter, locking, or migration implementation.
#55 Implement the named-row mutation push/pull/rebase protocol, including ordered idempotent mutations, consistent versioned pulls, deterministic conflict copies, restore epochs and a deletion drain gate. ❌ Although the PR description claims this protocol, the supplied diff contains tests for protocol helpers but no production implementation of the wire, row, server, or client behavior.
#55 Make S3StorageProvider.list return entries from every page. ❌ The diff does not modify S3StorageProvider or add tests for paginated listing.

Possibly linked issues

  • #unspecified: The PR implements the issue’s mutation-sync protocol, including ordered pushes, consistent pulls, rebasing, deletion gating, durable saves, and restore epochs.

Getting Help

…ir copy policy

src/features/sync/mutations/counter.ts: readCounter, writeCounter and
nextCounter keep mutation ids, versions and cookies as decimal text,
read back as safe non-negative integers before any arithmetic; ids
start at 1 and never wrap; CounterError names no value.
src/features/sync/mutations/wire.ts: the push, pull and answer types and
their parsers (parsePushRequest, parsePullRequest, parsePullResponse,
parsePushAnswer, parsePullRefusal), which refuse any other shape with a
WireError that names the field, never its value.
src/features/sync/mutations/rows.ts: create, edit, delete and repair on
named text rows (applyRowMutation), settled by the server's order with
a copy whose id is derived from the group, the client and the mutation
id (copyIdOf); a mutation that names an earlier mutation's revision
follows that mutation's recorded result, and copies and unreadable rows
count toward the row limit. planRowChanges turns a save into the
mutations it needs.
src/features/sync/mutations/index.ts: the module's exports, the tab lock
among them.
src/features/sync/index.ts: the sync entry exports the module.

…apless, fenced deletes, tombstones

tests/mutations/harness.ts: the world the server suites run in, one
database from the suites' backends with the reference store's tables
under the test's prefix, one scope with one group, an epoch the test
can change, and a codec that binds a value to its scope and row; push
and pull helpers that read a pull's whole stream as a transport does.
tests/mutations/server.push.spec.ts: on sql.js, better-sqlite3 and
Postgres, a push commits its effects, results, last id and version
together and a repeated push applies nothing twice; a batch past the
next expected id aborts with nothing written; the deletion hook sees
the accepted deletes alone, a throw rolls the push back whole, and the
batch is taken again after its deletion is replayed; a no-op records
the revision the row had and a dependent mutation is compared against
it; a permanent refusal consumes its id while any other failure
consumes nothing; a tombstone refuses a create for the group's life;
a resent create after another client's delete is skipped; a changed
epoch is answered before any read and another group after its group
row alone.
…pec.ts; its apostrophe ended the single-quoted string, so the file did not parse
…ll from one transaction, tombstone replay, and a reference SQL store

src/features/sync/mutations/server.ts: MutationServer over a store port
the caller implements (MutationServerStore). push runs a client's
mutations in id order in one transaction under the group's row lock: an
id at or below the client's last is skipped, one past the next expected
id aborts the batch with nothing written, and the effects, the results,
the client's last id and the group's new version commit together. A
permanent refusal consumes its id; any other failure, a throw from the
beforeWrite hook among them, rolls the push back whole. The hook sees
the accepted deletes before anything is written. pull answers a changed
epoch, another group or a cookie past the version before any row is
read, and otherwise streams one JSON answer from one transaction: the
version, the rows in batches, the client's results and every client's
last id. replayTombstone writes a deletion fence's tombstone at the
group's next version and touches no client's last id; an existing
tombstone is kept. ValueCodec seals and opens a stored value, and a
value it cannot open makes the row unreadable, never absent.
src/features/sync/mutations/handOver.ts: a one-slot hand-over that keeps
a pull's transaction open until its consumer has taken the last chunk;
cancelling refuses the waiting chunk, which rolls the transaction back.
src/features/sync/mutations/sqlStore.ts: a reference store on four
tables of its own under a prefix, for SQLite and Postgres alike; on
Postgres a pull reads in REPEATABLE READ and a push or a replay waits at
most lockTimeoutMs for the group's row lock.
src/features/sync/mutations/index.ts: the three modules' exports.
… and the drain gate

tests/mutations/server.pull.spec.ts: on sql.js, better-sqlite3 and
Postgres, a full pull streams in batches of two from one snapshot while
another push commits (Postgres commits it between the pull's reads, a
SQLite connection holds it until the pull's transaction ends), and the
next delta pull carries that push alone; a stream dropped before its end
or whose request is aborted ends its transaction, and the next push and
pull go through; a row whose stored value was moved from another row is
carried as unreadable; a cookie past the version, another epoch and
another group are refused before any row is read; a deletion's block on
the gate cancels a stalled reader and the gate drains within its
deadline.
tests/mutations/gate.spec.ts: a blocked key turns new requests away and
cancels the ones inside at once; a drain answers drained once the last
request inside leaves and stuck past its deadline; a key stays blocked
until every block on it is released; a cancel that throws leaves the
block standing, the other requests cancelled and one log line written.
…d waits for them to leave

src/features/sync/mutations/gate.ts: DrainGate, the gate a server's sync
requests pass while they can read, commit or send rows. A request enters
under its keys (a scope's, a group's) with a function that cancels it
and holds a GateLease until it ends. A deletion's block on a key turns
new requests under it away with GateBlocked, cancels the ones inside at
once, and its drain waits for them to leave up to a deadline, answering
drained or stuck. A key stays blocked while any block holds it. A cancel
that throws is logged through the host logger and the block goes on, so
the other requests inside are still cancelled and the deletion keeps a
block it can release. The gate is one process's; a server whose sync
routes run in several processes holds its own across them.
src/features/sync/mutations/index.ts: the gate's exports.
… offs and restores against three databases

tests/mutations/harness.ts: the browser half: a loopback transport into
the world's server that can go offline, lose a push's answer, hold a
pull's answer and refuse a push over a byte limit as a 413 does;
browsers whose blocks a materializer writes, over an in-memory IndexedDB
adapter or one the test gives; settle; and a dump and a restore of the
server's tables that changes the restore epoch.
tests/mutations/client.spec.ts: against a server on sql.js,
better-sqlite3 and Postgres: a join hands three rows to a second
browser, and creates, edits and deletes converge; mutation ids rise
across a reload and a second tab whatever the clock says; a lost push
answer applies once, and an older pull answer is dropped with the edit
made meanwhile kept; forty values of 30,000 code units travel in several
pushes; a push refused as too large is split in order, and a mutation
refused alone stops the sends; a value too long stays in its browser and
a refused one is kept; two offline edits of one revision converge in
either order with one copy; a save whose durable write IndexedDB refused
is gone whole, and under crossTab with rollbackRefusedSaves a statement
queued behind it stores nothing of it; a no-op create is followed to the
revision it recorded; and packing by the exact UTF-8 bytes of the
request.
tests/mutations/client.join.spec.ts: identical unmarked blocks merge
once and a differing block of the same id becomes a copy; a block
unchanged since an off takes the account's value, and a deletion made
while off is not sent; a decline sends nothing; an old group's refused
push keeps its text, and an old answer cannot clear the new membership.
tests/mutations/client.restore.spec.ts: a restore is found by its epoch
after the counter passed the old cookie, and the journal's mutations go
again with their ids; a replayed deletion fence removes an unchanged
downloaded row; a healthy local block stays beside a differing restored
row until the account matches it; a journal with a hole retires the
client and keeps its pending values.
…ps, and every other answer as SyncUnavailable

tests/mutations/transport.spec.ts: against a server on sql.js,
better-sqlite3 and Postgres, a push and a whole pull travel through push
and pull routes over the server, with quotes, a newline and multibyte
text in the value, and the pull route's refusal of an old epoch comes
back as the protocol's refusal. With a stubbed fetch: 413, 429 with and
without Retry-After, 400 and a status the caller's refusal hook maps
become the refusals the client reads; an answer cut short, a body of
null or a number, another answer's shape, a 500 and a refusal the pull
does not take reject with SyncUnavailable, as do a failed request and
one past its deadline.
…, an atomic pull apply, packed pushes, joins, leaves and restore recovery

src/features/sync/mutations/client.ts: MutationClient over any
StorageAdapter, its tables beside the caller's data under a prefix
(sync_ by default): the membership with its group, client id,
activation, restore epoch, cookie and next mutation id; the canonical
rows; the pending mutations and a journal of every mutation it issued
in its group; its own results; the comparison base an off leaves; and
the rows it keeps alone with their reasons. Every operation runs under
the client's tab lock on a freshly reloaded image in one transaction;
an IndexedDbConflictError runs it once more, and any other failure
reloads the stored image before the error leaves the lock. A save
commits the caller's data with its mutations and their journal records;
a value too long for the account stays in the browser. A push sends the
pending mutations in id order, splits a batch the route refuses as too
large, and stops the sends on a mutation refused alone. Only a pull
acknowledges: a complete answer is applied while its context and cookie
hold, refused values are kept, the processed mutations dropped and the
rest replayed by the server's row mutators, and the caller's
materializer receives what became visible. A join stages a full snapshot
before it merges the caller's blocks: an identical unmarked block takes
the row's id, a marked block identical to the account's or unchanged
since the last off takes the account's value, and every other block is
created under its id. A decline and a leave keep the caller's data. A
changed epoch keeps every downloaded row aside, takes a full snapshot
and pushes again from the journal what the restored server lacks; a
journal with a hole retires the client.
src/features/sync/mutations/transport.ts: MutationTransport,
SyncUnavailable and createFetchMutationTransport, which reads a
response's whole body before it parses any of it and maps 413, 429 and
400, or what the caller's refusal hook maps, to the protocol's
refusals.
src/features/sync/mutations/packing.ts: packMutations and requestBytes:
batches in id order by the exact UTF-8 bytes of the request they travel
in.
src/features/sync/mutations/index.ts: the three modules' exports.
tests/mutations/client.spec.ts: the case that carries forty values of
30,000 code units took 2 to 3 seconds per database on a CI runner
against the 5-second default; it now has 20 seconds, so a slower runner
does not fail it.
src/features/sync/mutations/client.ts: a push schedules nothing, the
pull after it acknowledges; under crossTab the adapter also needs
rollbackRefusedSaves for a statement queued on it behind a refused
save; the kept rows that become differing or removed are the ones kept
across a restore, kept unreadable or already differing; the conflict
and roll-back comments name the IndexedDB adapter's options as they are
spelled.
…; unreadable repair; a kept row put back

tests/mutations/client.removal.spec.ts: against a server on sql.js,
better-sqlite3 and Postgres: a downloaded row a restore lost stays kept
across a reload, a failed apply and a second restore until an explicit
save puts it back; a block is backed only by a readable account copy of
the same id and text with nothing pending, and the check does not run
while a mutation is pending or a recovery is open; a removal holds every
save, a confirmation another tab changed is void, and the removal leaves
a declined choice with a new activation and no sync record; an
unreadable row is repaired at its revision with the healthy text; a
browser that never joined is removed at once; an off learned under an
open question voids the confirmation, and a check that could not run
removes nothing; a removed row is never put back under its tombstoned
id; and a save that issues no mutation leaves the stamp as it was.
…pairs, and a kept row put back

src/features/sync/mutations/client.ts: beginRemoval and cancelRemoval
hold and release every save (RemovalInProgress); backedUp checks each
block against a readable canonical row of the same id and text, only
while joined with nothing pending, no recovery open and sends open, and
answers a stamp of the client's own records (state, activation, group,
epoch, cookie, counters, kept rows); removeAll deletes every sync record
of the scope and runs the caller's removal in the same transaction,
refusing a changed stamp (RemovalInvalidated), and while joined it runs
only inside a removal with the stamp of a check that ran
(RemovalNotStarted otherwise), leaving a declined choice for the group
with a new activation. repairUnreadable issues a repair at the kept
revision for each row the account still holds unreadable there, and
restoreKept puts a kept row back with a create under its id, never a
removed or unreadable one.
tests/mutations/loop.spec.ts: a loop over a client that records its
calls pushes and pulls at once on start, pulls every 60 seconds while
the page is visible and never while it is hidden, and again when the
page becomes visible; a failed cycle is tried again after 2 seconds,
doubling to 300, and the pace comes back once a cycle succeeds; a save
pushes at once, a kick during a cycle runs one more cycle after it, and
a rate refusal is waited as long as it asks.
…'s tabs

src/features/sync/mutations/loop.ts: SyncLoop runs a cycle (a push, then
a pull) at start, at once on a save, when the page becomes visible, on
reconnecting and on sign-in, and every 60 seconds while the page is
visible; a failed cycle is tried again after 2 seconds, doubling to 300;
a rate refusal is waited as long as it asks; one cycle runs at a time
and a kick during a cycle runs one more after it; attachSyncLoop kicks
it on visibilitychange, focus and online and answers the detach.
src/features/sync/mutations/channel.ts: changeChannel tells a page's
other tabs that the client committed, through a BroadcastChannel where
the page has one.
src/features/sync/mutations/index.ts: exports both modules.
…listener, the page's events and the change channel

tests/mutations/loop.spec.ts: a kick during a rate refusal's wait, or
during the cycle the refusal ends, runs nothing until the wait is over,
and a stop drops the wait so a start runs at once; an error listener
that throws leaves the retry in place; attachSyncLoop kicks on becoming
visible, on focus while visible and on coming online, and nothing after
its detach; changeChannel tells another channel of its name, a detached
listener hears nothing more, and without a BroadcastChannel it is
silent.
…or listener leaves the retry in place

src/features/sync/mutations/loop.ts: while a rate refusal's wait runs, a
kick runs nothing, and a kick during the cycle the refusal ended is
served by the cycle the wait's timer runs instead of one at once, so the
loop never calls the server before the wait it was told; stop() drops
the wait, so a start after it runs at once; an error the onError
listener throws is dropped, so the cycle's retry is still scheduled and
nothing rejects unhandled.

High-Level Assessment

The following are alternative approaches to this PR:

1. Extend existing cross-platform sync
  • ➕ Could reuse an established sync entry point and some integration patterns.
  • ➖ Its existing model does not directly provide per-client ordered mutation IDs, recorded outcomes, or journal replay after restores.
  • ➖ Changing it would increase regression risk for existing consumers.

Recommendation: Keep this as a separate protocol exported beside cross-platform sync. Its ordered, idempotent mutations and restore journal require distinct state and transaction boundaries; adapting the existing sync model would couple different conflict strategies.

Action required

1. Long edits restore the old text locally ✓ Resolved
Description
save() keeps an over-limit edit under a random id without changing the canonical row under the
edited id. When it materializes the post-save view, it overwrites the caller's edited row with its
old value and adds the long text as another row; repeating the edit generates another new id.
Code

src/features/sync/mutations/client.ts[R341-345]

+        if (mutation.name !== 'delete' && mutation.args.value.length > this.options.policy.maxUnits) {
+          const id = mutation.name === 'create' ? mutation.args.id : this.randomId();
+          await this.keep(trx, { id, value: mutation.args.value, reason: 'too_long', group: null, revision: null });
+          tooLong.push(id);
+          continue;
Evidence
The over-limit branch creates a random kept id for edits, while visible rows still include the
unchanged canonical id. The materializer updates existing blocks by id and inserts missing ones, so
the computed change restores the canonical value and inserts the kept copy.

Agent prompt
The issue below was found during a code review. Follow the provided context and guidance below and implement a solution

## Issue description
An over-limit edit is kept under a random id, causing materialization to restore the old value at the edited id and add a new local row.
## Fix Focus Areas
- src/features/sync/mutations/client.ts[333-365]
- src/features/sync/mutations/client.ts[1019-1026]
## Recommended Fix
Keep the edited text visible under a stable identity without overwriting the caller's edit. Ensure repeated saves of the same edit do not create another kept row, and test the resulting caller data.

2. Refused text is lost after a server restore ✓ Resolved
Description
When apply runs with m.recovering set, it calls rebuildPending instead of dropAcknowledged.
rebuildPending deletes every pending row and re-inserts only journal entries above acknowledged,
so a pending create, edit or repair at or below the restored last id whose recorded result is
refused (full, too_long or removed) is never moved into the kept table. This happens when
the epoch changes after the server has already processed and refused a mutation but before the
client's next pull. recover keeps only canonical-source rows, so the person's text was visible
only through the pending overlay, and changeOf(before, after) then has materialize delete it
from the caller's data.
Code

src/features/sync/mutations/client.ts[R725-728]

+      const acknowledged = readCounter(answer.lastMutationIds[context.clientId] ?? '0');
+      let state: Membership = { ...m, cookie: readCounter(answer.cookie), syncedAt: this.now().toISOString(), nextMutationId: Math.max(m.nextMutationId, acknowledged + 1) };
+      if (m.recovering) state = { ...(await this.rebuildPending(trx, state, acknowledged, before)), recovering: false };
+      else await this.dropAcknowledged(trx, state, acknowledged);
Evidence
recover (lines 803-805) keeps only rows whose source is canonical. rebuildPending (lines
763-768) wipes pending and re-adds only mutation_id > acknowledged. The keep-refused logic exists
only in dropAcknowledged (lines 743-747), and the recovery branch at line 727 skips it. The
visible change computed at 731-732 then deletes the dropped value from the caller's data.

src/features/sync/mutations/client.ts[798-813]

Agent prompt
The issue below was found during a code review. Follow the provided context and guidance below and implement a solution

## Issue description
During a recovery pull, `apply` calls `rebuildPending`, which drops pending mutations at or below the acknowledged id without keeping the values of refused ones. The person's text is then deleted from the caller's data.
## Fix Focus Areas
- src/features/sync/mutations/client.ts[725-728]
- src/features/sync/mutations/client.ts[738-750]
## Recommended Fix
In the recovering branch, run the refused-value keeping step of `dropAcknowledged` on the pending rows with id <= acknowledged (using the freshly written results) before calling `rebuildPending`. One way is to call `dropAcknowledged(trx, state, acknowledged)` first and then `rebuildPending`. Add a test where the server refuses a create with `full`, the epoch then changes, and the full recovery pull must leave the value kept.

Remediation recommended

3. Failed joins leave browsers in limbo ✓ Resolved
Description
join() persists state: 'joining' before awaiting the transport pull, but a rejected pull has no
cleanup or retry path. After a transient network failure, both push() and pull() return idle
for that state, so retries by the sync loop cannot complete the join.
Code

src/features/sync/mutations/client.ts[437]

+    const answer = await this.options.transport.pull({ group: input.group, epoch: input.epoch, clientId, cookie: null });
Evidence
The join intent is committed before the unguarded transport call. contextOf() requires joined,
and the loop calls only push and pull; neither can advance the stranded membership.

src/features/sync/mutations/client.ts[237-244]
src/features/sync/mutations/client.ts[369-392]
src/features/sync/mutations/loop.ts[80-92]

Agent prompt
The issue below was found during a code review. Follow the provided context and guidance below and implement a solution

## Issue description
A rejected join pull leaves durable membership in `joining`, which the normal push/pull loop cannot advance.
## Fix Focus Areas
- src/features/sync/mutations/client.ts[412-445]
- src/features/sync/mutations/loop.ts[80-92]
## Recommended Fix
Provide a retry path for a persisted joining intent, or safely revert it on a rejected pull. Handle rate refusals without silently abandoning that intent, and test an interrupted join followed by a retry.

4. Postgres clients reject large counters ✓ Resolved
Description
clientDdl() stores cookies, mutation ids, revisions, and versions in INTEGER columns although
the protocol accepts safe-integer counters and the server uses BIGINT. A client using a Postgres
storage adapter cannot persist a pull cookie or mutation id above the Postgres integer range, so
synchronization fails even while the wire and server can represent it.
Code

src/features/sync/mutations/client.ts[R206-209]

+ `CREATE TABLE IF NOT EXISTS ${p}membership (scope TEXT PRIMARY KEY, state TEXT NOT NULL, grp TEXT, client_id TEXT, activation TEXT NOT NULL, epoch TEXT, cookie INTEGER, next_mutation_id INTEGER NOT NULL, sends TEXT NOT NULL, recovering INTEGER NOT NULL, declined_group TEXT, removing INTEGER NOT NULL, synced_at TEXT)`,
+ `CREATE TABLE IF NOT EXISTS ${p}rows (scope TEXT NOT NULL, id TEXT NOT NULL, state TEXT NOT NULL, value TEXT, rev_client TEXT NOT NULL, rev_mutation INTEGER NOT NULL, version INTEGER NOT NULL, PRIMARY KEY (scope, id))`,
+ `CREATE TABLE IF NOT EXISTS ${p}base (scope TEXT NOT NULL, id TEXT NOT NULL, value TEXT NOT NULL, PRIMARY KEY (scope, id))`,
+ `CREATE TABLE IF NOT EXISTS ${p}pending (scope TEXT NOT NULL, mutation_id INTEGER NOT NULL, name TEXT NOT NULL, args TEXT NOT NULL, size_error INTEGER NOT NULL, PRIMARY KEY (scope, mutation_id))`,
Evidence
The client accepts any StorageAdapter and uses INTEGER for these persisted counters; the reference
server declares the corresponding counters BIGINT, while readCounter accepts safe integers well
beyond the narrower range.

## Issue description
Client SQL tables use narrower counter columns than the protocol and reference server tables.
## Fix Focus Areas
- src/features/sync/mutations/client.ts[204-213]
- src/features/sync/mutations/sqlStore.ts[19-26]
## Recommended Fix
Use `BIGINT` for persisted client counters that can reach the wire protocol's safe-integer range. Add a Postgres client-storage test that persists a cookie above the `INTEGER` range.

5. Restarted sync waits on an old refusal ✓ Resolved
Description
stop() clears the timer but does not invalidate an in-flight cycle(), and start() sets
stopped back to false while that cycle is still running. If the old request then returns a rate
refusal, its completion installs a refusal timer and suppresses the restarted loop's pending kick
until that wait expires.
Code

src/features/sync/mutations/loop.ts[R49-52]

+  start(): void {
+    this.stopped = false;
+    this.kick('load');
+  }
Evidence
A restart during a running cycle sets again, rather than starting fresh. The old cycle checks only
the current stopped flag after completion and, on refusal, sets holding and its timer, causing
subsequent kicks to be ignored.

src/features/sync/mutations/loop.ts[49-70]
src/features/sync/mutations/loop.ts[108-126]

Agent prompt
The issue below was found during a code review. Follow the provided context and guidance below and implement a solution

## Issue description
An in-flight cycle can schedule its old rate-refusal wait after the loop has stopped and restarted.
## Fix Focus Areas
- src/features/sync/mutations/loop.ts[49-70]
- src/features/sync/mutations/loop.ts[108-126]
## Recommended Fix
Track a run generation or cancel in-flight work so an earlier cycle cannot set timers or holding state for a restarted loop. Test stopping and restarting before a pending request returns a rate refusal.

6. A refused row's id changes when acknowledged ✓ Resolved
Description
visible() shows a pending refused create or edit whose target row is live under
copyIdOf(context). When the refusal is acknowledged, dropAcknowledged keeps the same value under
a fresh this.randomId(). Every refusal against a live row (full or a too-long copy) therefore
has materialize delete the row under one id and write it again under another, so anything the
caller or the person tied to that id breaks, and a save made in between plans mutations against an
id that no longer exists.
Code

src/features/sync/mutations/client.ts[R744-746]

+        const live = canonical.get(result.targetId);
+        const id = live !== undefined && live.state !== 'tombstone' ? this.randomId() : result.targetId;
+        await this.keep(trx, { id, value: pending.mutation.args.value, reason: result.reason, group: m.group, revision: null });
Evidence
Line 1014 picks copyIdOf(context) for the provisional row when the held target is live. Line 745
picks this.randomId() for the same case when the refusal is acknowledged, so the visible id
changes between the two states.

src/features/sync/mutations/client.ts[1012-1016]
src/features/sync/mutations/client.ts[743-747]

Agent prompt
The issue below was found during a code review. Follow the provided context and guidance below and implement a solution

## Issue description
A refused pending value is shown under the copy id derived by `copyIdOf`, but once acknowledged it is kept under a random id, so the caller's row id changes.
## Fix Focus Areas
- src/features/sync/mutations/client.ts[743-747]
- src/features/sync/mutations/client.ts[1012-1016]
## Recommended Fix
In `dropAcknowledged`, when the target is live, derive the kept id with `await copyIdOf({ group: m.group, clientId: m.clientId, mutationId: String(pending.mutationId) })` instead of `this.randomId()`, so it matches the provisional id shown before the acknowledgement.

…d values through a restore, a failed join and wide counters

tests/mutations/loop.spec.ts: a cycle that was running when the loop
stopped and started again schedules nothing of its own, so a rate
refusal it brings back does not hold the new run's first cycle; a start
after a stop begins its retries from 2 seconds again.
tests/mutations/transport.spec.ts: a rate refusal whose Retry-After is
an HTTP date waits until that date; a date already past and a value it
cannot read wait two seconds.
tests/mutations/client.spec.ts: an edit too long for the account stays
under its row's id, a second such edit adds no row, and a save that
fits edits the row at the revision the long text was made against; a
value the full account refused is kept under the id it was shown at
while its refusal was pending; a client keeps a cookie, mutation ids
and versions above the 32-bit range in its own tables on every
database.
tests/mutations/client.restore.spec.ts: a value the account refused
before the dump is kept when the recovery pull acknowledges the
refusal.
tests/mutations/client.join.spec.ts: a join whose snapshot never comes
leaves the membership off, not joining, and the next join merges the
browser's rows.

before `rebuildPending` so refused acknowledged values are preserved before
pending rows are rebuilt; keep the non-recovery path’s behavior unchanged.
- Around line 744-746: In the refusal-handling block, derive the kept value’s ID
with the same `copyIdOf` inputs and live-target condition used by `visible()`,
instead of generating a random ID. Keep `result.targetId` for non-live targets
so the caller continues to see the refused value under the ID already shown.
- Line 437: In the join flow around `transport.pull`, reset the membership to

that kick proceed.

Review comments at @src/features/sync/mutations/server.ts:
- Around line 250-282: Update the pull transaction flow around `handOver` to
support an optional `maxPullMs` setting on `MutationServerOptions`; when

stalled reader cannot keep the transaction open. Clear the timeout when the
transaction finishes, and preserve the existing abort and iterator-return
cancellation behavior.

Review comments at @src/features/sync/mutations/transport.ts:
- Around line 44-47: Update retryAfterMs to support both numeric seconds and

…ong edits and refused values keep their ids, and wide counters

src/features/sync/mutations/loop.ts: a stop ends the run: a cycle that
was running when the loop stopped schedules nothing of its own, even
when the loop starts again before that cycle ends, and the new run's
first kick runs at once; start() begins the retries from firstRetryMs
again.
src/features/sync/mutations/transport.ts: a rate refusal's Retry-After
is read as delay-seconds or as an HTTP date, the wait running until
that date; a value it cannot read, zero or a date already past waits
two seconds.
src/features/sync/mutations/client.ts: an edit too long for the account
is kept under its row's id with the revision it was made against, and a
save plans it as an edit at that revision, so a second long edit adds
no row and a save that fits edits the row; a pull that ends a recovery
keeps the values of the refused mutations it acknowledges before the
pending set is rebuilt; a refused value is kept under the id the
browser showed it at while the refusal was pending (the copy's id
beside a live row) instead of a random one; a join whose snapshot
request fails turns the membership off again before the error reaches
its caller, as a refused one did; the client's counter columns are
BIGINT, so a Postgres client keeps a cookie or a mutation id past the
32-bit range.
tests/mutations/server.pull.spec.ts: a server with maxPullMs of 50
cancels a stream whose reader took the first chunk and stopped reading;
the stream's transaction ends without the reader, its next read is
PullCancelled, and a push then commits at once.
…tops reading cannot hold it

src/features/sync/mutations/server.ts: MutationServerOptions.maxPullMs
(default 120,000 ms, the fetch transport's own deadline; Infinity sets
no limit) bounds how long a pull's transaction stays open: a stream
still open then is cancelled as an abort cancels it, its transaction
rolls back, and the timer is cleared when the transaction ends.

Review findings on this branch, each fixed test first:

  • Codex (1) and Qodo (6), on 3b0bee0: a date-form Retry-After; a too-long edit kept under a random id; refused values dropped by the pull that ends a recovery; a failed join left joining; INTEGER counter columns on a Postgres client; a stopped and restarted loop holding an old refusal; a refused value moving from its copy id to a random one. Tests in 100e783 (red, run 39076709688), fixes in 307c8c0 (green, run 39077327698).
  • CodeRabbit (8), on 100e783: the same seven, marked addressed in 307c8c0, and a pull transaction a stalled reader could hold open. Test in 4fcadfb (red, run 39077834737), fix in e95081a (maxPullMs, default 120 seconds; green, run 39077980779).

CodeRabbit's docstring-coverage warning counts every function the diff touches, private helpers and inner callbacks included; every exported symbol of src/features/sync/mutations/ carries a TSDoc comment, which is what this repository asks of a public API, so no comment was added to private helpers.

…un at once

tests/mutations/loop.spec.ts: a rate refusal asking for 3,000,000,000
ms holds the loop for the longest wait a timer can hold, 2^31 - 1 ms,
instead of the timer firing at once and the loop asking again every
millisecond; the cycle runs when that wait ends.
…g rate refusal is not run at once

src/features/sync/mutations/loop.ts: every wait the loop sets (a rate
refusal's, a retry's, the pull pace) is held to 2^31 - 1 ms, the longest
a timer holds; a longer one fired at once in browsers and Node, so a
refusal asking for more set the loop asking again every millisecond.

tests/mutations/server.pull.spec.ts: the case that stops reading set
maxPullMs to 50 ms, and the deadline counts from the pull's call, so a
transaction that took longer than that to start was cancelled before the
reader took its first chunk and the case failed for a reason it does not
test. The deadline is 500 ms; the wait for the stream's end stays at 2 s,
well past it.
src/features/sync/mutations/server.ts: the option's comment called it how
long a pull's transaction may stay open; its timer starts when pull() is
called, so a pull's wait for a transaction counts toward it. The comment
says so.
