Summary

Fixes the defects the review threads on #44 (0.7.15) and on this pull request name, each with its spec first. Master released 0.8.0 to 0.8.2 while this was open, so the 0.7.18 bump is dropped: 2696297 merges master, package.json keeps 0.8.2, and the changelog entries sit under Unreleased, worded against 0.8.2, which behaves the same (#71's browser entry is already in 0.8.0).

Exporter (PostgresExporter.ts, pgConnection.ts, features.ts)

  • A URI password that is not valid percent-encoding, or that decodes to a NUL, and a connection string that holds a NUL are refused before pg_dump starts, with no connection string in the message. 0.7.15 passed such a URI whole, its password in --dbname.
  • keyword=value settings: the password moves to PGPASSWORD, read as libpq's conninfo_parse reads it (a value to whitespace or in single quotes, backslash escapes, the later password wins, the next keyword read at once after a closing quote). An empty password goes to PGPASSWORD empty. An unterminated quote or a setting with no = is refused.
  • An @ in the query of a URI with no path: a string handed to PostgresExporter is read as libpq reads it (fe-connect.c, conninfo_uri_parse_options). pg reads a pool's string with the WHATWG URL parser, which ends the authority at ?, so pg_dump reached another host; the features exporter now writes pg's reading as an explicit libpq URI.
  • A pool's settings are read as pg 8.23.1 reads them (lib/connection-parameters.js): a connection string's parts over the settings, then PGHOST, PGPORT, PGUSER, PGDATABASE, then localhost, 5432, the operating system's user and the user's name. pg takes the database from the URL's path alone and reads an empty host parameter as none (pg-connection-string 2.14.1, index.js:40-67), and the URI holds that reading.
  • A password function of the pool's is called when the export runs, as pg calls it for each connection: as a method of a client made of the pool's settings, with no arguments before pg 8.19.0 and with the client's ConnectionParameters from 8.19.0 (node-postgres #3602). That client is never connected and is made without the settings' stream. Its answer goes to PGPASSWORD, no password gives an empty PGPASSWORD, and a throw or a non-string refuses the export.
  • TLS follows pg's, and so does the check of the server. TLS that checks nothing (rejectUnauthorized: false, no-verify) is sslmode=require over any PGSSLMODE. TLS that checks the server (ssl: true, {}, ssl=1, a certificate file or another sslmode in the string, a PGSSLMODE pg reads as TLS) is sslmode=verify-full, or verify-ca where pg checks no host name, against the string's sslrootcert, else PGSSLROOTCERT, else sslrootcert=system (libpq 16 and later; with an older libpq the export's error says what to do). uselibpqcompat=true with verify-ca and no root certificate is refused, as pg refuses it. A pool that chose no TLS gets sslmode=disable whatever PGSSLMODE says. ca, cert, key, pfx and the other TLS options are refused, naming them and what to do, since pg_dump reads TLS material from files alone.
  • pg_dump runs with --no-password, so it never waits for a password on a terminal or on its standard input.
  • sslpassword, oauth_client_secret and the SCRAM keys of a pool's connection string are left out: libpq takes them from the connection string alone, and pg reads none of them.
  • sslnegotiation reaches pg_dump as the pool's own pg reads it (b488a85, against the specs of 78f4a3a). pg reads it from 8.22.0 and with direct starts TLS at once; pg 8.13.1 to 8.21.x read none and send an SSLRequest, and pg-connection-string turns TLS on for direct from 2.14.0 only. The exporter reads it on a client of the pool's Client, never connected, with a probe client for the parse's TLS rule, so a pool whose pg reads none gives pg_dump none, and TLS for direct only where its parse turns TLS on. Where pg cannot be read, the reading is pg 8.22.0's and the storage logger says so once. A value pg refuses refuses the export. The adapter's exporter runs pg_dump without PGSSLNEGOTIATION (PostgresExporterOptions.unsetEnvironment), which libpq 17 would read beside the URI, and a libpq older than 17, which refuses the parameter, gets words saying what to do. This answers the Codex P1 and the CodeRabbit finding on these lines in Land three idle pull requests in one batch: #67, #16, #15 #76's review, where this pull request sat before its own build was found red.

Resolver (resolver.ts): a postgres candidate opens in its own or the top-level segment alone. Tried after an IndexedDB candidate whose options named a segment, a pool of the caller's threw, and a server got a schema only the browser's options asked for. Local candidates still take the segment.

IndexedDB adapter (indexedDbAdapter.ts): a PRAGMA's head is read as SQLite reads it, so PRAGMA user_version /* note */ = 7, PRAGMA"user_version"=9 and PRAGMA 'user_version' = 10 through get() or all() are saved.

Key-value codec (valueCodec.ts): the text is written from the copy structuredClone returns, so a getter is read once and its first answer stored, and the value is copied once.

Also released here: #64 (S3StorageProvider.list() past the first page), which merged after 0.7.15 without a version.

Tests

CI on 75024e0, before master's merge: build (95 files, 1842 passed, 37 skipped), browser, postgres18 and codecov/patch green. 78f4a3a added the sslnegotiation specs red; b488a85 makes them pass and adds specs for PGSSLNEGOTIATION, a refused value and libpq 16's refusal.

CI's PostgreSQL (pgvector 0.8.7 on 16, scram-sha-256 over TCP) runs the exporter through the real pg_dump: a pool whose password is a function, with PGPASSWORD empty; a pool whose connection string libpq reads apart from pg (postgresql://localhost:5432?application_name=x@y); and the export's call of a pool's password function compared with the pool's own. A second PostgreSQL, started in the build job, offers TLS with a certificate made for the run (tests/postgres.exporter.tls.spec.ts): ssl: true is refused where pg refuses the server, rejectUnauthorized: false exports, the root certificate named in the string exports, a host the certificate does not name is refused, and uselibpqcompat=true&sslmode=verify-ca exports where pg connects. The resolver spec on the same server checks that the postgres candidate opens and makes no schema for the IndexedDB segment. The rest: postgresExporter.args (execFile mocked, with parity checks against pg's own ConnectionParameters), segment, indexedDbAdapter.durability (fake-indexeddb), kv/valueCodec, features.

Exports of pools whose password function returns no password may succeed through a local password file even though the pool itself connects with none. A single-quoted PRAGMA assignment in IndexedDB may also not advance the save generation. Resolve both, or accept them explicitly, before merging.

Change Details Files
Harden PostgreSQL export connection handling and align adapter-pool exports with pg/libpq behavior.
  • Parse URI and keyword=value connection strings according to libpq, remove passwords from command-line arguments, and reject NULs, malformed encoding, and invalid settings before spawning pg_dump.
  • Add asynchronous connection-string resolution, including pool password callbacks, environment/default precedence, TLS mode translation, unsupported TLS-material validation, and filtering of parameters pg does not read.
  • Preserve pg’s interpretation of pool connection strings by emitting an explicit libpq URI and add real and mocked coverage for passwords, parsing, defaults, TLS, and secret filtering.

High-Level Assessment

The following are alternative approaches to this PR:

1. Pass resolved connection through pg_dump flags and environment
  • ➕ Could avoid constructing a libpq URI for basic host, port, user, and database settings.
  • ➖ Still requires pg-compatible parsing, TLS translation, and careful handling of connection-string parameters and secrets.

Recommendation: Keep the libpq URI approach: it preserves supported connection parameters in one pg_dump input while separating passwords into PGPASSWORD. Because it duplicates parts of pg and libpq parsing, maintain focused compatibility tests as those dependencies change.

database query parameter. For postgresql://app@db.example/?database=reports, the pool selects
reports, while the generated URI selects PGDATABASE or, without it, app.
Code

src/exporters/pgConnection.ts[R214-217]

+  const path = pathname.slice(1);
+  const database = path ? decoded(decodeURI, path) : undefined;
+  if (path && database === undefined) return undefined;
+  return { user, password: secret, host, port, database, parameters };
Evidence
The parser records query parameters and applies some as connection overrides, but never applies
database; readAsPg() replaces the database with the path-derived result and then falls back to
the environment or user name.

## Issue description
A pool connection string can set `database` in its query, but the exporter takes only the URI path and may dump another database.
## Fix Focus Areas
- src/exporters/pgConnection.ts[175-217]
- src/exporters/pgConnection.ts[248-255]
## Recommended Fix
Apply the parsed `database` query parameter with the same precedence as pg before resolving environment defaults. Test a conflicting URI path or default database.

2. Empty host overrides reach the wrong server ✓ Resolved
Description
parseAsPg() treats an empty host query value as absent and substitutes the URI hostname before
pg’s environment fallback runs. With postgresql://app@url-host/app?host= and PGHOST=env-host,
the pool uses env-host, but the exporter writes url-host into the URI.
Code

src/exporters/pgConnection.ts[R205-209]

+  let host = parameter('host');
+  if (!host) {
+    const fromUrl = decoded(decodeURIComponent, hostname);
+    if (fromUrl === undefined) return undefined;
+    host = fromUrl;
Evidence
Query values are collected even when empty, but the truthiness check replaces an empty host with
url.hostname. readAsPg() then accepts that nonempty parsed host, and its PGHOST fallback
cannot run.

## Issue description
Empty connection-string query overrides are replaced with URI authority values, so the export can use a different host from the pool.
## Fix Focus Areas
- src/exporters/pgConnection.ts[175-213]
- src/exporters/pgConnection.ts[251-256]
## Recommended Fix
Distinguish an absent query parameter from one present with an empty value. Preserve the empty override through parsing so pg-style environment defaults apply, and test an empty `host` override with `PGHOST` set.

3. Exports can use an unrelated password ✓ Resolved
Description
passwordOf() accepts undefined from a pool password callback, but the generated URI supplies no
password and pgDumpInvocation() leaves inherited credentials available to pg_dump. When
PGPASSWORD is set, an export after that callback uses it even though the callback gave the pool
connection no password.
Code

src/exporters/pgConnection.ts[R349-353]

+  if (answer === undefined) return undefined;
+  if (typeof answer !== 'string') {
+    throw new Error('PostgresExporter: the password function of the pool answered no string, which pg refuses too.');
+  }
+  return answer;
Evidence
The callback's undefined result is explicitly accepted, the URI password is emitted only for a
truthy result, and the child environment inherits process.env when the invocation supplies no
override. The added test asserts that inherited PGPASSWORD remains.

- src/exporters/pgConnection.ts[363-380]
- src/exporters/PostgresExporter.ts[225-236]
## Recommended Fix
Distinguish a callback result from an absent configured password. Prevent inherited libpq credentials from replacing a callback's passwordless result, or refuse the export if that result cannot be represented faithfully. Test with nonempty `PGPASSWORD`.

4. Exports can use TLS against pool settings ✓ Resolved
Description
readAsPg() leaves PGSSLMODE=prefer active when the pool explicitly sets ssl: false, because
prefer is classified as a plain mode. On a TLS-capable server, libpq prefers TLS for the export
while the pool uses its explicit non-TLS setting.
Code

src/exporters/pgConnection.ts[R312-315]

+    } else if (env.PGSSLMODE && !PLAIN_SSLMODES.has(env.PGSSLMODE)) {
+ // pg connects without TLS here, its ssl being false or PGSSLMODE a value it does not know. libpq would read
+ // PGSSLMODE: it refuses pg's no-verify, and require or verify-* insist on TLS where pg makes none.
+      connection.parameters.push(['sslmode', 'disable']);
Evidence
Explicit settings.ssl takes precedence over the environment for the pool model, but the
PLAIN_SSLMODES guard prevents an overriding URI parameter for prefer. The child inherits that
environment setting.

src/exporters/pgConnection.ts[100-120]
src/exporters/pgConnection.ts[297-316]
src/exporters/PostgresExporter.ts[225-236]

Agent prompt
The issue below was found during a code review. Follow the provided context and guidance below and implement a solution

## Issue description
An explicit pool `ssl: false` is not carried to pg_dump when inherited `PGSSLMODE` is `prefer`.
## Fix Focus Areas
- src/exporters/pgConnection.ts[100-104]
- src/exporters/pgConnection.ts[297-316]
## Recommended Fix
When the pool explicitly disables TLS, emit `sslmode=disable` if inherited `PGSSLMODE=prefer` could enable it. Add a test for that combination.

ⓘ Copy this prompt and use it to remediate the issue with your preferred AI generation tools

5. Exports can reject the pool's TLS peer ✓ Resolved
Description
readAsPg() preserves PGSSLMODE=verify-full even when the pool explicitly has `ssl: {
rejectUnauthorized: false }`. With a certificate the pool is configured to accept without
verification, pg_dump instead requires certificate and hostname verification and can fail the
export.
Code

src/exporters/pgConnection.ts[R308-310]

+ // libpq's require encrypts and checks no certificate; a PGSSLMODE that checks one is kept.
+      if (!TLS_SSLMODES.has(env.PGSSLMODE ?? '')) {
+        connection.parameters.push(['sslmode', 'require']);
Evidence
The adapter passes explicit ssl to its pool; the converter recognizes rejectUnauthorized as an
allowed setting but emits no URI override when inherited PGSSLMODE is verify-full. The
invocation passes that environment to pg_dump.

src/adapters/postgresAdapter.ts[1375-1379]
src/exporters/pgConnection.ts[224-231]
src/exporters/pgConnection.ts[297-310]

Agent prompt
The issue below was found during a code review. Follow the provided context and guidance below and implement a solution

## Issue description
An inherited `PGSSLMODE=verify-full` overrides a pool's explicit choice not to verify its TLS peer during export.
## Fix Focus Areas
- src/exporters/pgConnection.ts[297-316]
## Recommended Fix
Determine the export TLS mode from the pool's explicit `ssl` setting before retaining `PGSSLMODE`. Override conflicting inherited verification for `rejectUnauthorized: false`, and test that combination.

Informational

6. Password cleared by keyword parsing falls back to PGPASSWORD unexpectedly ✓ Resolved
Description
keywordConnectionOf strips every password= setting out of the string regardless of its value,
including an explicit empty password='', and only sets PGPASSWORD when password is truthy.
libpq, given an explicit empty password in the string, does not fall back to
PGPASSWORD/~/.pgpass, but after this rewrite the empty password setting is simply removed and
libpq falls back to whatever PGPASSWORD happens to hold in the environment, changing which
credential is used for login.
Code

src/exporters/PostgresExporter.ts[R177-185]

+  if (passwordSpans.length === 0) return { dbname: connectionString, env: {} };
+  let kept = '';
+  let from = 0;
+  for (const [start, end] of passwordSpans) {
+    kept += text.slice(from, start);
+    from = end;
+  }
+  kept += text.slice(from);
+  return { dbname: kept.trim(), env: password ? { PGPASSWORD: password } : {} };
Agent prompt
The issue below was found during a code review. Follow the provided context and guidance below and implement a solution

## Issue description
`keywordConnectionOf` removes every `password=` keyword/value pair from the connection string, including an explicit `password=''`, and only emits `PGPASSWORD` when the value is non-empty. This differs from libpq, which treats an explicit empty password as 'no password, do not consult PGPASSWORD or ~/.pgpass', so removing the setting changes the effective credential used to whatever is in the ambient PGPASSWORD.
## Fix Focus Areas
- src/exporters/PostgresExporter.ts[172-185]
## Recommended Fix
When the parsed password value is an empty string, keep an explicit marker (e.g. still set `PGPASSWORD=''` or leave a `password=` placeholder in the dbname string) so pg_dump does not fall back to an ambient PGPASSWORD or ~/.pgpass that libpq itself would have ignored.

…LS follows pg's, and pg_dump never asks for a password

- keyword=value settings with an empty password, and a pool whose password
  function answers none, hand pg_dump an empty PGPASSWORD while the
  environment holds another (libpq reads PGPASSWORD only for a password left
  out; pg reads none after a function's empty answer)
- a pool that checks no certificate gets sslmode=require over a PGSSLMODE of
  verify-ca or verify-full; a pool that chose no TLS gets sslmode=disable over
  prefer or allow; an empty PGSSLMODE, which libpq refuses, gives way to
  disable; ssl=0 beside a certificate file and an sslmode libpq does not know
  are TLS, as pg reads them
- pg's own ConnectionParameters names the host, port, user and database of
  the URI, a database parameter and an empty host parameter included; on CI's
  server the export reaches the database and host pg reaches for both, and
  is refused like the pool where the password function answers none
- pg_dump runs with --no-password
… pg's reading, and pg_dump runs with --no-password

- keyword=value settings: an empty password goes to PGPASSWORD empty, as
  libpq reads an empty setting, so the environment's PGPASSWORD is never sent
  in its place
- a pool's password function that answers no password: the URI holds an
  empty password parameter, which becomes an empty PGPASSWORD, since pg then
  connects with none and reads no PGPASSWORD (lib/client.js, _getPassword)
- TLS is read as pg reads it: the connection string's ssl as
  pg-connection-string makes it (a certificate file over ssl=0, no-verify and
  uselibpqcompat's prefer and require checking no certificate), else the
  settings', else PGSSLMODE. TLS that checks no certificate is require over
  any PGSSLMODE; no TLS the pool chose is disable; where no TLS is pg's
  default, libpq's default stays unless PGSSLMODE is one libpq refuses; an
  sslmode libpq does not know is require
- pg_dump runs with --no-password: with no password for a server that asks,
  it asked on the terminal or waited on its standard input, which execFile
  leaves open
- README and CHANGELOG 0.7.16 say so, and that a database parameter and an
  empty host parameter are read as pg reads them
…hich the server would hold half logged in

pg-pool drops a client whose connection failed without ending it, and pg
leaves its socket open, so the server kept that login waiting until
authentication_timeout. DROP DATABASE ... WITH (FORCE) in the suite's
afterAll waited on it (ProcSignalBarrier), and a CREATE INDEX CONCURRENTLY
in another suite waited on DROP DATABASE's transaction. The export alone
shows pg_dump refused with no password.

#66 merged at 23:16Z with 0.7.16 in package.json and a ## [0.7.16] section in CHANGELOG.md, and its release run publishes that version. This branch now conflicts on both files: it needs 0.7.17, with its own section above #66's, or its fixes publish nothing (a push whose version npm already has publishes nothing, per RELEASING.md).

Merged master (#66) in 9daa91e and moved this branch to 0.7.17 in 234d89c: its notes are a ## [0.7.17] section above #66's ## [0.7.16], which is master's byte for byte, and #64's line left this section since 0.7.16 released it.

On the code review summary for 75024e0: its two open items, 1 (a database parameter) and 2 (an empty host parameter), are the findings its own threads closed as false positives at 23:17Z (1, 2). pg reads neither string as they describe. pg-connection-string 2.14.1 copies the query into its config (index.js:40-42), then takes the host from the URL wherever the host parameter is empty or missing (index.js:54-56), and the database from the URL's path alone, null without one (index.js:66-67); pg's ConnectionParameters then falls back to PGDATABASE and the user's name. So postgresql://app@db.example/?database=reports reaches PGDATABASE or app, and postgresql://app@url-host/app?host= reaches url-host whatever PGHOST says, for the pool and the export alike. The exporter's URI holds that reading; specs pin both with mocked arguments, against pg's own ConnectionParameters, and through the real pg and pg_dump on CI's server. No change.

…s own Client, the libpq parameters pg does not read are left out, the port is read with parseInt as pg reads it, and an IPv6 host reaches libpq whole

On CI's server: a pool whose Client asks its password function with no arguments, as pg before 8.19.0 does; a pool connection string with a passfile parameter pg does not read, beside the password file PGPASSFILE names; and a pool whose port is 5432x, which pg reads as 5432.
…Client, leave out the libpq parameters pg does not read, and read the port with parseInt as pg does

pg-pool keeps the Client it makes its connections with as the pool's Client, and that Client's own routine (_getPassword, _checkPgPass in pg 8.13.1 and before) asks the function on a client of the pool's settings with its pg's arguments, so a pool of another copy of pg is asked as its own pg asks. The URI keeps the parameters pg reads (options, application_name, fallback_application_name, client_encoding, replication, sslnegotiation and the certificate files); passfile, target_session_attrs, require_auth and the rest made pg_dump read another password file or refuse what the pool takes. A port of 5432x is 5432 and a port of 0 gives way to PGPORT, as pg reads them; a port pg reads no number in is refused.
…ient, keeps the parameters pg reads and reads the port as pg does; 0.7.18 releases the browser entry (#71)

… pg reads it, and TLS where its parse turns TLS on for direct

pg reads sslnegotiation from 8.22.0, from the connection string, then the
settings, then PGSSLNEGOTIATION, and with direct starts TLS at once. pg 8.13.1
to 8.21.x read none and open TLS with an SSLRequest, and pg-connection-string
turns TLS on for sslnegotiation=direct from 2.14.0, a version their caret
ranges admit from either side. A fixture Client stands for such a pool, with
either parse.

On CI's PostgreSQL 16, which offers no TLS, a pool whose pg reads nothing in
sslnegotiation=direct connects; on CI's TLS server, a pool that opens TLS with
an SSLRequest past it connects. Each export must reach what the pool reaches.
package.json keeps master's 0.8.2: 0.7.18 was never published and master
released 0.8.0 to 0.8.2. The branch's changelog entries move under
Unreleased, without the browser entry 0.8.0 already lists, and say
"versions through 0.8.2" where they said 0.7.17, since 0.8.2 behaves
the same.
… it, and TLS for direct only where its parse turns TLS on

pg reads sslnegotiation from 8.22.0 (the connection string's over the
settings', an empty one as none, then PGSSLNEGOTIATION) and with direct
starts TLS at once; pg 8.13.1 to 8.21.x read none and start TLS with an
SSLRequest, and pg-connection-string turns TLS on for
sslnegotiation=direct from 2.14.0 only. The exporter handed pg_dump the
string's sslnegotiation and turned TLS on for direct whatever the pool's
pg read, so an export failed where the pool connected.

sslNegotiationOf() reads it on a client of the pool's Client (or the pg
this library loads), never connected, and a probe client shows whether
that Client's parse turns TLS on for direct; where neither can be read,
the reading is pg 8.22.0's, which the storage logger says once. A value
pg refuses refuses the export. The adapter's exporter runs pg_dump
without PGSSLNEGOTIATION (PostgresExporterOptions.unsetEnvironment),
which libpq 17 would read beside the URI, and a libpq older than 17 that
refuses the parameter gets words saying what to do. The README and the
changelog say so.

…rd function answers none

pg connects with no password then and reads neither PGPASSWORD nor a
password file (lib/client.js, _getPassword). The URI held an empty
password, which kept the environment's PGPASSWORD off pg_dump, but libpq
given an empty password reads PGPASSFILE's file or ~/.pgpass
(fe-connect.c, connectOptions2), so pg_dump could log in with a password
the pool never sends. The URI now also names a passfile that does not
exist, which libpq takes as none with no warning (passwordFromFile).

pg-connection-string 2.14.1 (the version pg 8.23.1 takes) copies the query parameters into the config first (index.js:40), then sets config.database = pathname ? decodeURI(pathname) : null (index.js:67). The URL's path therefore always overwrites a database parameter, and an empty path overwrites it with null. pg then reads PGDATABASE, then the user's name (lib/connection-parameters.js, val('database', config)). So for postgresql://app@db.example/?database=reports the pool connects to PGDATABASE or app, never to reports, and the exporter's URI says the same.

tests/postgresExporter.args.spec.ts:1183-1184 pin both cases (a database parameter with no path, and with an empty path) to PGDATABASE. Lines 1200-1201 hold the exporter's reading equal to pg's own ConnectionParameters for the same strings.
