Summary

  • Adds the Review comments workflow (.github/workflows/review-comments.yml). On every pull request from a branch of this repository (opened, synchronize, reopened, and an edited event that changes the base branch), it runs ESLint with the pattern of npm run lint ("src/**/*.{ts,tsx}", the repository's eslint.config.js) on the pull request's head, Node 22 and npm install as CI uses them, and posts each finding on a line the pull request adds as a review comment through reviewdog (reviewdog/action-eslint v1.36.1, pinned by commit; reporter github-pr-review, filter_mode: added, level warning). Lines the pull request does not change get no comment.
  • Each run deletes reviewdog's earlier comments whose finding is gone (a comment with a reply stays). That happens only in a run, so the workflow has no path filter: a push that drops a pull request's last change under src/ still runs it.
  • A title or body edit skips the job, and its run takes a concurrency group of its own, so it cannot cancel a lint run in progress.
  • It never fails (fail_level: none, the action's replacement for the deprecated fail_on_error) and is not a required check. CI's build job keeps its own lint step unchanged, and build and browser stay the required checks.
  • Pull requests from forks are skipped: their GITHUB_TOKEN is read-only, so reviewdog could not post. Runs that Dependabot triggers are skipped too: Dependabot changes manifests and never a line under src/, and skipping its runs keeps a newly bumped ESLint package from running with this workflow's token. A maintainer's push to a Dependabot branch still runs.
  • Prettier is left out: prettier is not a dependency, the repository has no Prettier config, and CI does not check formatting.
  • CONTRIBUTING.md describes the workflow.

Checklist

  • Tests added/updated: this pull request runs the new workflow
  • Docs updated (CONTRIBUTING.md)

Summary by Sourcery

Add optional ESLint review comments for newly added pull-request lines without affecting required CI checks.

New Features:

  • Add an optional workflow that posts ESLint findings on lines added by eligible pull requests as review comments.

Enhancements:

  • Limit review comments to pull requests from branches in the repository and skip fork and Dependabot pull requests that cannot publish reviews.

CI:

  • Run ESLint review feedback with Node 22 while keeping the existing required CI checks unchanged.

Documentation:

  • Document the ESLint review-comments workflow in CONTRIBUTING.md.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Chores
    • Pull requests from branches in the repository now receive ESLint feedback as review comments on added lines when relevant files change. Findings are warnings and do not fail the pull request.
  • Documentation
    • Added guidance on when ESLint review comments appear and how they affect pull requests.

… comments

A pull request from a branch of this repository that changes src/, the
ESLint config, package.json or this workflow runs ESLint with the lint
script's pattern on its head, and each finding on an added line becomes a
review comment. The job never fails and is not a required check; the build
job's lint step is unchanged. Forks and Dependabot are skipped, since their
token cannot post a review. CONTRIBUTING.md describes it.

In a narrow timing scenario, Dependabot updates can leave a pull request without ESLint review comments, and the contributor guide overstates Dependabot coverage. These bounded issues do not block the PR, but merit follow-up.

High-Level Assessment

The following are alternative approaches to this PR:

1. GitHub App for fork support
  • ➕ Could enable review comments on fork pull requests with separately managed credentials.
  • ➖ Requires app installation, credential management, and substantially more operational complexity.

Recommendation: Use the pinned reviewdog action for this scope: it provides added-line filtering and inline comments without a custom integration. Accepting the documented fork exclusion keeps the workflow simpler and avoids managing elevated credentials.

Action required

1. Pull requests can access a write token 🐞 Bug ⛨ Security
Description
The eslint job grants write permissions and passes GITHUB_TOKEN to the review action after
checking out the pull request's head, where ESLint loads the pull request's executable
eslint.config.js. A contributor who can open a same-repository branch pull request can change that
config and a matching source file, causing their JavaScript to run in the token-bearing action step
with pull-request and check-write access.
Code

.github/workflows/review-comments.yml[R19-20]

+ pull-requests: write
+ checks: write
Evidence
The same-repository gate permits branch pull requests, the checkout selects their head SHA, and the
review action receives the write-capable token. The repository's ESLint configuration is a
JavaScript module, so running ESLint on a changed config executes pull-request-controlled code.

## Issue description
The workflow executes pull-request-controlled ESLint configuration in a job with a write-capable GitHub token.
## Fix Focus Areas
- .github/workflows/review-comments.yml[17-20]
- .github/workflows/review-comments.yml[33-56]
## Recommended Fix
Run ESLint on the pull-request head without write permissions or a write-capable token. Publish its findings in a separate trusted job that does not execute pull-request code, granting that job only the permission needed to post review comments.

reviewdog's github-pr-review reporter writes through the pull request API

**ESLint comments are skipped or stale**

When a pull request has more than 300 changed files with all matching paths after the first 300, or reverts its last matching file after a run has posted comments, the `paths` filter skips the workflow, so the first case gets no ESLint comments and the second leaves findings from the earlier run visible.

When a maintainer triggers an event on a Dependabot pull request from a branch in this repository, the actor check admits the job, which runs the pull request's packages and ESLint config, but the pull request's read-only token prevents reviewdog from posting findings.

Gate the job on the pull request author and skip Dependabot pull requests, rather than relying on who triggered the event.

**Retargeted PRs retain stale comments**

When a maintainer changes a pull request's base branch, the workflow does not run on `edited`, so reviewdog never recalculates or removes the old review comments; after retargeting, comments remain associated with the previous base's added-line diff.

Include the `edited` pull-request event so reviewdog can refresh comments after a base-branch change.

…hange of base

reviewdog deletes its earlier comments whose finding is gone, but only in a
run; with the path filter, a push that dropped a pull request's last change
under src/ started none, so the stale comment stayed. The workflow now runs on
every pull request from a branch of this repository.

edited is added for a change of base branch, so the comments follow the new
diff. A title or body edit skips the job, and its run takes a concurrency group
of its own, so it cannot cancel a lint run in progress.

The job's comment gave the wrong reason for skipping Dependabot: the
permissions key raises a Dependabot run's token, so it could post. Dependabot
changes manifests and never a line under src/, and skipping its runs keeps a
newly bumped ESLint package from running with this token.

🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Keep skipped Dependabot runs out of the lint concurrency group.

If a maintainer starts lint on a Dependabot pull request and Dependabot updates that pull request before lint finishes, the new workflow run cancels the maintainer’s run. The job condition then skips the new run, so neither run posts findings. Give Dependabot-triggered runs a unique group, as this expression already does for title- and body-only edits. GitHub applies this concurrency setting to workflow runs, not only to jobs that pass their conditions. (docs.github.com)

Review comment at @.github/workflows/review-comments.yml at line 26:
Update the workflow-level concurrency group expression so runs triggered by
github.actor `dependabot[bot]` use github.run_id as a unique group suffix, while
preserving the existing unique-group behavior for title- and body-only edits and
the shared `eslint` group for other runs.

9. Open a Pull Request

On a pull request from a branch of this repository (not a fork), the Review comments workflow posts ESLint's findings on the lines the pull request adds under `src/` as review comments. Each run also deletes its earlier comments whose finding is gone, unless someone has replied to the comment. The workflow never fails the pull request.

Document the Dependabot exclusion.

This sentence says the workflow posts comments on pull requests from repository branches. The workflow skips Dependabot pull requests. State that exception so contributors do not expect a run on those updates.

Update the Review comments workflow description in CONTRIBUTING.md to state that
it skips Dependabot pull requests, while preserving the existing explanation of
which pull requests receive comments.
