Analyzer gaps: constant-only argument folding, ORDER BY over grouping expressions, SUM(x + c) rewrite - #143
Conversation
…egates, SUM(x + c) rewrite Constant-only arguments (round/ceil/floor scale, date_part field, LIMIT) fold to Spark's rule: arithmetic, comparisons, logic, CASE/if/coalesce, concat and the deterministic string/math/arithmetic functions are evaluated through the executor's kernels, and what folding raises is raised at the argument. LIMIT checks IS_UNFOLDABLE/IS_NULL/IS_NEGATIVE. first/last keep requiring a boolean literal. ORDER BY and HAVING over an aggregate resolve a written-out grouping or output expression to the aggregate's attribute by Spark's semanticEquals (commutative operands sorted, a > b as b < a), including HAVING ... ORDER BY over a new aggregate. SUM(x +- c) over TINYINT/SMALLINT columns with |c| <= 2^16 becomes SUM(x) +- c * COUNT(x), where the type range proves no per-row overflow; other types are left alone (conditions in sum_rewrite.rs). Also fixes date_add/date_sub without ANSI: a fractional string day count is SECOND_FUNCTION_ARGUMENT_NOT_INTEGER and a string column is UNEXPECTED_INPUT_TYPE (Spark 3.5 to 4.2). Rewrite rule and optimizer wiring crates/krishiv-optimizer/src/sum_rewrite.rs, crates/krishiv-optimizer/src/lib.rs, crates/krishiv-optimizer/src/restrict.rs, crates/krishiv-optimizer/Cargo.toml, crates/krishiv-optimizer/CLAUDE.md |
The optimizer recognizes eligible shifted integral sums and reconstructs their outputs using SUM(x) and COUNT(x). It shares generated aggregates when possible and applies the rewrite after the rewrite batch. The rule checks operand bounds and per-row overflow conditions. |
Optimizer integration coverage crates/krishiv-optimizer/tests/it/* |
Tests cover eligible and unchanged expressions, aggregate reuse, grouped queries, scalar subqueries, output columns, and optimization fixed-point behavior. |
Executor differential coverage crates/krishiv-exec/tests/planner/* |
Generated and deterministic tests compare analyzed and optimized results across data, grouping, batch sizes, and ANSI modes. Overflow cases check that the rewrite is not applied. |
Analyzer and Function Updates
| Layer / File(s) | Summary |

Function argument and literal contracts crates/krishiv-functions/src/signature.rs, crates/krishiv-functions/src/registry/*, crates/krishiv-functions/src/scalar/mod.rs, crates/krishiv-plan/src/analyzer/coerce.rs, crates/krishiv-plan/src/analyzer/exprs.rs |
CallTypes now distinguishes plain literals from folded constants. Function binding supplies literal flags and uses configured folding. Legacy date-count strings must parse as full i32 values, and the optional first/last argument must be a literal boolean. |
Configured constant folding crates/krishiv-plan/src/analyzer/fold.rs, crates/krishiv-plan/src/analyzer/fold_ops.rs, crates/krishiv-plan/src/analyzer/mod.rs |
The analyzer folds supported numeric, comparison, boolean, string, conditional, and scalar-function expressions. ANSI and decimal-precision settings affect evaluation. Tests cover folding behavior, errors, NULLs, and expressions that remain non-foldable. |
LIMIT binding and validation crates/krishiv-plan/src/analyzer/resolve.rs |
LIMIT expressions bind against the input relation’s output scope. The analyzer checks integer type, foldability, NULL values, negative values, and folding errors. |
Aggregate expression matching crates/krishiv-plan/src/analyzer/exprs.rs, crates/krishiv-plan/src/analyzer/ops.rs |
Semantic keys canonicalize selected operators. Aggregate binding and sorting can substitute matching grouping or aggregate output expressions, growing the aggregate when needed. |
Spark analyzer fixtures crates/krishiv-sql/tests/analyzer.rs, tests/scripts/gen_analyzer_goldens.py, crates/krishiv-plan/CLAUDE.md |
The analyzer tests load named Spark golden fixtures and compare folding and grouped-ordering cases. The generator supports folding-only runs and temporary views. |

Fix the folding fixture’s default output path before merging so regeneration cannot replace the full fixture. Strengthen the grouped-ordering assertions; deeply nested constant expressions retain an unverified stack-safety risk.

A small SQL statement can now trigger large string allocations before execution begins. This creates an availability risk; effective resource limits and isolation have not been established.
Retained concerns
- Medium · security · inferred: Scalar folding introduces an unbudgeted availability path during synchronous analysis. For example, analyzing SELECT length(lpad('', 1000000000, 'x')) reaches the padding kernel through argument folding and attempts a very large allocation and character-generation loop before query execution. The base folder did not evaluate resolved scalar calls. Offset checks and reservation errors limit malformed sizes, but no analysis-specific allocation or work budget appears in this path. Conditional folding also computes child results before selecting a branch, so suppressed errors do not imply suppressed resource consumption. Service-wide impact depends on deployment isolation and effective external limits, which are unknown.
Security review details
-
Security Blast Radius
- inferred — The identified exposure concerns memory and CPU in the process performing SQL analysis. A literal-only expression requires no table read to reach the expensive computation. Whether other tenants, requests, or services share those resources is not established.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
- inferred — A caller able to submit SQL for analysis can supply a small expression containing a large padding length. Argument folding invokes the padding implementation with one output row, but that row can contain a very large string. This establishes allocation and computation reachability, not an observed crash or verified production outage.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
- observed — The analyzer binds before synchronous resolution. Folding rejects nondeterministic, aggregate, distinct, and filtered calls. The padding kernel checks offset capacity before allocation and uses fallible reservation; these controls do not constitute an analysis-specific resource budget.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
- observed — Memoization limits repeated evaluation of shared expression nodes and is isolated to one analysis pass. However, child results are computed before conditional selection, so the documented lazy error behavior does not avoid computation in unselected branches.
Hardening Proposals
- proposed — Introduce explicit folding byte and work budgets before expensive scalar invocation, with controlled handling when a budget is exceeded. Schedule conditional children lazily so unselected branches do not consume evaluation resources.

Explanation
The description follows the template's main sections (Summary, Tests run, Verification, Checklist-equivalent items such as DCO-agnostic verification, performance and binary size) and gives concrete scope, behaviour, and measurements. It does not fill the template's 'Task / spec / ADRs' line with a task ID (it cites ADR 0023 and the matrix but not a P2-Txxx task), it does not include the template's 'Tests run' code block with the commands and result lines (it lists tools and says 'passes' without pasting output), and it does not address the checklist items for commit sign-off, SPDX headers, Spark error class/SQLSTATE registry use, distributed-execution readiness, Rust API guidelines for the new public items (for example
Baseline,Dispatch,legacy_day_count,is_argument_pure,with_literals,is_literal), or the performance review checklist. Some claims conflict with the objectives: the description says folding coversLIMIT/OFFSETand that the rewrite is forTINYINT/SMALLINT, while the objectives sayLIMITis literal-only at the physical level and the rewrite excludes other types as described. The description also mentions a 2.7k counted-line size, a golden of 6.7k lines, and an unreconciled budget-gate failure.Resolution
Add the task or spec reference (P2-Txxx, spec chapter, ADR numbers) to the Summary section. Paste the actual commands and their result lines into the 'Tests run' code block. Confirm the checklist items: DCO sign-off and Conventional Commits, SPDX headers on new files, Spark error classes and SQLSTATE from the registry, Spark-derived expectations, distributed-execution readiness, Rust API guideline compliance for new public items, and the ADR 0034 performance review items with a benchmark reference. Reconcile the description with the PR objectives about
OFFSETandLIMITphysical-planner support and the scope of theSUMrewrite. Explain the budget-gate status against the stored baseline.

LIMIT and OFFSET share main's limit_node; their counts take the folding checks of this branch (Spark's order: foldable, type, then the value). Signed-off-by: gopal tathe <44522021+techgopal@users.noreply.github.com>
Plan-time folding evaluated one-row arrays through the kernels with a KernelCtx, so every kernel instantiation it reached was compiled for each CPU target (baseline, x86-64-v3, x86-64-v4) and each operand shape (array/array, array/scalar, scalar/array): nine loops per kernel, which grew the dist binary by about 13%. Dispatching entry points now take `ctx: &impl Dispatch`, a sealed trait with two implementations: KernelCtx (unchanged: runtime CPU dispatch and scalar-operand loops) and Baseline, which runs the build-baseline loop only and repeats a scalar operand into an array, so it instantiates one loop per kernel. The folder (fold_ops.rs) evaluates on Baseline. Existing callers pass a KernelCtx as before; the two unsafe blocks are unchanged, only moved into KernelCtx's implementation. Dist binary (stripped, krishiv-cli): main 27,742,216 bytes; this branch before the change 31,445,896 (+13.4%); after 28,465,224 (+2.6%). Constant-argument folding now evaluates `1 + 1`, so the divergence the test recorded is gone; the expected values are Spark 4.2.0's. Signed-off-by: gopal tathe <44522021+techgopal@users.noreply.github.com>
`LIMIT length('ab') OFFSET 1 + 1` returns Spark 4.2.0's rows.

The Baseline equivalence test now honours KRISHIV_REQUIRE_TARGETS (a missing target fails instead of being skipped) and covers remainder by a scalar zero, a scalar-divisor fault on a NULL row, 150 rows (several chunks, a fault past the first) and the scalar shapes of the float kernels. The analyzer tests pin Spark's order for LIMIT and OFFSET counts: foldability before type (a STRING column, a nondeterministic DOUBLE call), and folded counts reaching the LIMIT + OFFSET bound. Error classes checked against Spark 4.2.0. Signed-off-by: gopal tathe <44522021+techgopal@users.noreply.github.com>
Miri randomizes NaN payloads, so two computations of the same NaN can differ bit for bit. Float results now match by validity and value: any NaN equals any NaN, every other value bit for bit (-0.0 is not 0.0). The integer, compare and decimal comparisons stay exact. Integrates the window functions (#144) with the analyzer gap fixes. Two interactions needed a decision: - ORDER BY over an aggregate with windows reads the select list only (Spark: UNRESOLVED_COLUMN); the HAVING-to-ORDER BY fallback that grows the aggregate no longer applies when the aggregate has windows. - ntile(1 + 1) now folds in the analyzer, so ntile's bucket count is rewritten to the literal it folds to (the window operator reads a literal). The ntile_folded golden matches Spark and its known-gap entries are removed. Signed-off-by: gopal tathe <44522021+techgopal@users.noreply.github.com>
Brings in the GROUP BY alias and CTE resolution work alongside the analyzer constant folding. Conflicts kept both sides: - The aggregate layer keeps the grouping-expression substitution for ORDER BY over aggregates and the new checks rejecting grouping by an aggregate or by a lateral alias reader. - The day-count rule keeps the shared day-count reader used by the analyzer's shown form, with the broader of the two day-count test lists and the stricter error-class assertion. - The analyzer tests keep both the nondeterministic LIMIT case and the new CTE and GROUP BY cases. Signed-off-by: gopal tathe <44522021+techgopal@users.noreply.github.com>
…luated LIMITs The analyzer folder now evaluates what Spark folds at analysis time for the places that read an evaluated value: - Casts to STRING and DATE fold through the cast kernels (with the executor's Utf8View-to-Utf8 normalization around the call), and date literals fold to dates. A folded date has no Constant, since the typing rules do not read dates, so it stays unfolded to them rather than raising; the calls evaluated from it still fold. - The day arithmetic, field functions and extract/date_part fold over dates. Over timestamps they stay unfolded: the folder has no session time zone. Clock and session functions never fold: the folder has no query start or user. - LIMIT and OFFSET only raise IS_UNFOLDABLE for what Spark calls not foldable (columns, nondeterministic calls, subqueries). A foldable expression the folder cannot evaluate passes through, as before, for the downstream folders and the executor to read. This restores main's behaviour for SELECT * FROM t LIMIT length(CAST(12 AS STRING)) and LIMIT year(DATE'2024-01-01') - 2020, which raised IS_UNFOLDABLE; the legacy date_add day count reads through CAST(1 AS STRING), shown as Spark's StringLiteralCoercion shows it; and round reads its scale through function-form concat, including concat arguments that need their own cast, giving decimal(11,2). Tests: analyzer SQL cases for the LIMIT, day-count, round-scale and pass-through shapes; folder unit tests for the new casts, datetime functions, the timestamp guard and clock exclusion; executor cases with runtime values for the LIMIT and date_add shapes, NaN/-0.0 and AND/OR short-circuit; tinyint/smallint per-row overflow cases for the SUM rewrite, which fail with its per-row guard removed. Spark checks done: the krishiv-sql analyzer corpus (folding goldens included), the TPC-H and window goldens, and the executor planner suite all pass. Not verified against a live Spark for the new SQL shapes: the expected rows, types and error classes follow the reviewed Spark behaviour recorded in the tests. What folding raises (round(d, 2147483647 + 1)under ANSI,1/0) is raised at the argument.LIMITandOFFSETcheckIS_UNFOLDABLE,DATA_TYPE,IS_NULLandIS_NEGATIVEin Spark's order; a folded count reaches the planner as a literal. The datetime/session/hash families and casts to string are not folded (known gap, matrix row).2. ORDER BY / HAVING over a grouping expression.

Expressions are now matched to the aggregate's grouping and output expressions by Spark'ssemanticEquals(commutative operands sorted and flattened,a > basb < a), andHAVING ... ORDER BYover a new aggregate works. ClickBench q43 in this form still stops earlier atDATE_TRUNC, unsupported and not part of this change; the synthetic equivalents are in the golden.3.
SUM(x +- c)asSUM(x) +- c * COUNT(x)(optimizer pass,sum_rewrite.rs). Only forTINYINT/SMALLINTcolumns (or casts of them) with|c| <= 2^16, where the type range proves no per-row overflow.INT/BIGINT, floating point (not associative) and decimals are left alone. Residual: the two forms can raise at different partial sums only after 2^46 rows in one ANSI aggregate (documented in the module, ADR 0023 and the matrix). The rewrite follows a known aggregate-rewrite pattern of this shape.Fixed on the way (found by the new golden): without ANSI,
date_add(d, '1.9')and'1.'areSECOND_FUNCTION_ARGUMENT_NOT_INTEGER(the old rule accepted fractions; Spark 3.5, 4.0, 4.1 and 4.2 all reject), a string column day count isUNEXPECTED_INPUT_TYPE, and the output name shows the integer.Verification

KernelCtxevery kernel instantiation it reached was compiled for each CPU target (baseline, x86-64-v3, x86-64-v4) and each operand shape (array/array, array/scalar, scalar/array): nine loops per kernel. Dispatching kernel entry points now takectx: &impl Dispatch, a sealed trait with two implementations:KernelCtx(unchanged: runtime CPU dispatch and scalar-operand loops) andBaseline, which runs the build-baseline loop only and repeats a scalar operand into an array, so it instantiates one loop per kernel.fold_ops.rsevaluates onBaseline. Existing callers still pass aKernelCtx. No newunsafe: the two existing blocks (unsafe_run_v3/unsafe_run_v4calls) are unchanged, only moved intoKernelCtx's implementation of the sealed trait.
