…via Expand Spark's ResolveGroupingAnalytics shape: an Expand plan node (plan data, streamed one copy per projection) feeds an ordinary aggregate. Adds the DataFrame rollup/cube/grouping_sets, Spark golden tests, optimizer cases and commutative semantic keys. Signed-off-by: gopal tathe <44522021+techgopal@users.noreply.github.com>

SQL and DataFrame grouping inputs crates/krishiv-session/src/dataframe.rs, crates/krishiv-sql/src/lower.rs, crates/krishiv-common/src/stack.rs, crates/krishiv-sql/tests/lower.rs |
DataFrame grouping methods represent rollup, cube, and explicit grouping sets. SQL lowering converts supported grouping forms into sets and rejects expansions above 65,536 sets. The stack-step constant changes from 64 to 32. A test covers lowering nested grouping sets on a small stack. |
Logical Expand plan and grouping-set construction crates/krishiv-plan/src/plan.rs, crates/krishiv-plan/src/analyzer/analytics.rs, crates/krishiv-plan/src/analyzer/resolve.rs, crates/krishiv-plan/src/display.rs, crates/krishiv-plan/src/encode.rs, crates/krishiv-plan/src/walk.rs, crates/krishiv-plan/src/lib.rs, crates/krishiv-plan/src/tests/* |
The logical plan adds Expand. The analyzer builds grouping-set projections, nullable grouping columns, and grouping IDs. Plan traversal, display, encoding, inventory, and property tests handle the new node. |
Aggregate and grouping-expression analysis crates/krishiv-plan/src/analyzer/* |
Aggregates carry grouping analytics metadata and use expansion keys and scope. The analyzer resolves grouping and grouping_id, rewrites expressions, and checks supported arguments and grouping contexts. Semantic keys treat supported commutative operators as order-independent. |
Physical Expand execution crates/krishiv-exec/src/operators/*, crates/krishiv-exec/src/physical/*, crates/krishiv-exec/src/planner/build.rs, crates/krishiv-exec/src/lib.rs |
Physical planning builds an Expand operator from projection projects. NullOf creates typed null arrays. Expand emits projected batches across calls and preserves input weights. |
Expand optimization and estimates crates/krishiv-optimizer/src/prune.rs, crates/krishiv-optimizer/src/stats.rs, crates/krishiv-optimizer/tests/it/* |
Column pruning retains and prunes matching Expand projection positions. Cardinality estimates account for the projection count, and the reference interpreter evaluates Expand projections. |
Grouping analytics validation crates/krishiv-session/tests/grouping_analytics*.rs, crates/krishiv-plan/src/tests/analyzer.rs |
Integration tests cover Spark golden queries, DataFrame and SQL results, output schemas, grouping IDs, error classes, and grouping limits. The analyzer tests remove ROLLUP from unsupported-input cases. |

Estimated code review effort: 4 (Complex) | ~60 minutes
Merge Risk:
Moderate · up to b3a96
-
Some grouping queries can consume excessive memory or spend a long time in analysis. Bound nested set accumulation and make duplicate detection scale before merging.
Security architecture risk:
Moderate · up to b3a96
-
The new query features allow compact requests to trigger substantial memory allocation and quadratic planning work. This can threaten availability where callers share a query process. Deployment protections and actual runtime impact remain unverified.
Retained concerns
- Medium · security · inferred: Nested GROUPING SETS materializes all child expansions before enforcing the outer 65,536-set limit. Each accepted 16-key CUBE contributes 65,536 vectors, and sibling cubes accumulate without an incremental limit before rejection. A caller permitted to submit SQL can therefore amplify planning memory without executing data rows. The base rejected these grouping forms.
- Medium · security · inferred: An accepted 16-expression CUBE produces 65,536 distinct grouping sets. Analyzer duplicate detection scans every preceding set, yielding 2,147,450,880 candidate comparisons. Expand estimation independently uses linear-search deduplication for the distinct grouping-ID literals, creating another quadratic path when optimization is reached. These newly reachable planning costs create a CPU-exhaustion opportunity despite the expression-count limit; elapsed time was not measured.
Security review details
-
Security Blast Radius
- inferred — The established exposure is callers able to submit SQL or construct DataFrame grouping plans. Resource pressure affects their query-processing process and could affect colocated queries. Unauthenticated network reachability, tenant sharing, and deployment-wide impact were not established.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
- inferred — Two introduced availability paths are supported: nested sibling cubes allocate their expansions before rejection, while a permitted maximum-sized cube triggers quadratic planning searches. Both derive work from caller-controlled grouping syntax rather than requiring a large input table.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
- observed — Controls reject mixed products above 65,536 sets, direct cubes above 16 expressions, and more than 64 distinct grouping expressions. These checks constrain selected shapes, but nested accumulation precedes the product check, and duplicate-set scanning remains quadratic within the accepted cube limit.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
- observed — Streaming expansion limits simultaneous output copies and preserves row weights, providing execution-side containment. It does not prevent earlier eager construction of grouping sets and projection plans.
Hardening Proposals
- proposed — Apply a shared incremental expansion budget before constructing or extending grouping-set collections, including explicit DataFrame sets. Replace prefix and literal linear-search deduplication with indexed membership while preserving grouping-set order and duplicate identity.

🟡 Minor · Replace the quadratic duplicate-set scan with a hash set. · analytics.rs:450
crates/krishiv-plan/src/analyzer/analytics.rs:450
🚀 Performance & Scalability | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick winReplace the quadratic duplicate-set scan with a hash set.
sets[..i].contains(&sets[i])compares each set with every earlier set. That is O(S²) in the number of sets.
CUBEwith 16 expressions is an accepted input and has S = 65,536 sets. The scan then makes about 2×10⁹Vec<usize>comparisons.- The new test
invalid_uses_have_spark_error_classesanalyzes this case throughcube(16)ingrouping_analytics_api.rs.- In debug builds, the test run and every analysis of a large cube slow down noticeably.

Integrates the window functions, OFFSET, the resolver's small-stack helpers and the CTE and alias fixes with the grouping-sets analyzer and the Expand node. Expand takes encoder tag 24 in the plan identity encoding (OFFSET 22, Window 23). The plan codec returns Unsupported for Expand and NullOf until the codec commit that follows. Signed-off-by: gopal tathe <44522021+techgopal@users.noreply.github.com>
PhysNode::Expand (ROLLUP, CUBE, GROUPING SETS) and the NullOf project item it uses made the codec's matches non-exhaustive. The proto gains ExpandNode (layout, projections, nullability, subqueries), ExpandProjection and ProjectNullOf. The writer format version becomes 5. A plan raises its min_reader_version to 5 only when it holds an Expand or a NullOf item, so other plans stay readable by older readers and an older reader never meets a node it does not know. The decoder refuses an expand without a projection and a projection whose item count differs from the nullability list. The v1 to v4 goldens still decode; the v5 goldens add three Expand shapes (a rollup with a grouping id, a single projection, a computed column beside a nulled one with a subquery). The TPC-DS ratchet shrinks by the four grouping-set queries (q05, q14, q18, q22) that now plan and round-trip. Signed-off-by: gopal tathe <44522021+techgopal@users.noreply.github.com>

The engine-raised error-class set grows with every implemented feature; the fixed one-tenth bound tripped once grouping sets added their classes (195 of 1,929). Bound the set at half the catalog, which still catches wholesale counting, and check on this repo that the comment and test filter drops real references.
